Questions and answers

You can start singing lessons at any age - even at 70. Ideally, you should not be younger than 10 - 12 years old, depending on your level of mental and physical development.

Are you thinking about taking singing lessons but are not sure how much you will really get out of it? You are not alone in these considerations, as many people interested in singing are faced with this decision in terms of costs and benefits. The problem is obvious: you can't measure the success of a singing course in the same way as a language course, continuing education, further training to become a management expert or training to become a yoga teacher. There is no prescribed procedure and no guarantee of success in becoming a big star. But this should not necessarily be your goal. If you want to improve your singing voice, expand your vocal range, learn to sing with more expressiveness and emotion or legato, learn the belting technique, find the right pitch for you, filter out your head voice or chest voice, learn breathing techniques and vocal techniques and make the most of your potential through targeted exercises, then yes, singing lessons can definitely help you.

Singing lessons are worthwhile for anyone who enjoys music and singing and are not exclusively aimed at people who want to pursue a career as a musician. Singing lessons are also worthwhile for people who often speak in front of people, e.g. teachers, actors, speakers, etc.

Singing lessons are primarily about improving voice quality - and this is possible for everyone. So anyone can learn to sing.

Singing lessons can be organized in very different ways and depend on the individually defined goal that has been discussed with the singing teacher. The following can be done during a singing lesson:

  • Breathing exercises / diaphragm training
  • Warm-up exercises
  • Posture exercises
  • Exercises for vocal technique (vocal range, head voice, belly voice, mixed voice, high and low singing, vocal tone, etc.)
  • Learning to sing a song
Most singing lessons begin with the correct breathing technique and a warm-up, during which your vocal chords are loosened and you often sing various tone sequences. Such an exercise also aims to make you forget your everyday life for the duration of the lesson and concentrate exclusively on yourself and your voice. However, during this time you will also learn how to use your voice correctly, how to breathe properly when singing and find the right pitch / key for you. You will expand your vocal range and strengthen your voice (voice training). This part is often followed by vocal training in the form of interpretations. This means that you sing various songs in your preferred style and are supported, corrected and encouraged by your voice coach / singing teacher. You will learn to apply the right techniques in practice and find your own style. You can often also request piano or keyboard accompaniment.
Singing lessons are offered for beginners as well as for advanced and professional singers. As a beginner, you do not need any previous singing experience, but you should be able to read music. If you are unable to read music, please contact the singing school or music school you prefer and let them know. As a rule, it is possible for you to learn this during the lessons and thus learn to interpret a wide variety of songs / song lyrics.
Unfortunately, there is no general answer to this question. Singing lessons do not have a fixed duration within which you can go from beginner to professional. Voice training is a process that is as individual as each aspiring singer themselves. However, you should be aware that beginners will not be able to sing like their great role model after just 3 or 4 hours of vocal exercises. This would be an illusion that you should abandon at an early stage. For classical vocal training, you should reckon with at least 4 years of vocal training in order to be able to start a career as an opera singer, for example. Bachelor's degree courses in music are also possible and last 6 semesters, i.e. three years of full-time study. However, if you just want to train and shape your voice a little, learn basic techniques and take singing lessons from trained singers, a six-month course can also be a good first step. If you are not sure whether singing lessons are really suitable for you, it is a good idea to attend a trial lesson first. Ask the music schools about such offers and get to know the methodology and the people behind the vocal training.
Most singing schools offer one-to-one singing lessons, but group lessons are also often possible. However, if you want to take vocal coaching for the first time, individual training could be the more sensible alternative for you, as you and your voice can be dealt with individually and intensively. If you already have basic vocal training and enjoy singing in a group, group lessons are a very beneficial experience. The music schools or singing teachers will be happy to help you decide which lessons are right for you. Simply click on the relevant schools and write about your concerns in our contact form. You will receive an answer and the relevant information documents on singing lessons by email within a very short time. Quick, easy and without obligation.
