Agricultural clerks have a broad-based commercial and agricultural education and extensive specialist knowledge of agricultural trade and markets. The activities start with primary production, through the value chain to the end consumer in the retail trade. He/she can take on a management position in one of the three hundred agricultural cooperatives in Switzerland (Landi) and the trade organizations of the cooperative agricultural trade (fenaco).

He/she can also exercise his/her profession in the food or agricultural sector, in private agricultural trade or as a link between consumers and wholesalers. The profession can also be carried out in the sale and trade of animal feed, fertilizers and plant protection products and seeds, as specialist advice is particularly important in these areas.

He/she is a sought-after specialist in the retail trade or in processing companies, in service companies or agricultural organizations, agricultural trustees and cantonal and federal administrations. A great deal of specialist knowledge in the field of agricultural trade and agricultural markets, with a particular focus on marketing, company management and sales. She/he knows economics and business administration very well and knows how to use them in the company where she/he manages accounting and finance and prepares the balance sheet and income statement. She/he is used to successfully launching the company's products on the market by means of comprehensive marketing strategies, advertising and PR campaigns. She/he is oriented towards all areas of the market, such as food, animal feed and non-food. She/he also supervises the quality of stock keeping, stock management and transportation. She/he is familiar with national and international guidelines, agreements and regulations in the agricultural sector of the EU market and world trade. She/he knows the agricultural policy of the various organizations. Externally, he/she provides support for farmers in insurance or tax matters or helps with their bookkeeping.

Questions and answers

Training to become an agricultural clerk is a course that lasts six semesters, i.e. three years. During this time, you will attend a total of around 1500 lessons. This means that you have around 20 course days per semester, often on a Saturday, to ensure that you can continue to work. In addition to these courses, a project week is held twice a year. Although the continuing education, further training to become a certified agricultural business management assistant CHE is not exactly short, it is also realistic for people who are fully employed due to the Saturday dates. However, you should be aware that in addition to the lessons, there will be some preparation and follow-up time, which you should not underestimate. As a rule, self-study to the same extent as the lessons is expected, i.e. 1500 hours in total. It is best to ask the relevant schools directly about the additional time required (homework, preparation and follow-up work, exam preparation). They can usually give you a fairly realistic answer to this question based on experience. So talk to the training providers about training as an agricultural clerk and ask for all the necessary documents.

Here in Switzerland, agronomists are trained exclusively on a part-time basis in order to give them the opportunity to continue working at least 50 percent.

The CHE agricultural business management assistant course is a continuing education, further training course that requires interested parties to already have a sound basic education and professional experience in order to be able to continue their education in a targeted manner.   • Completed apprenticeship of at least three years in the agricultural industry or a related sector
  • At least one year of professional experience in the agricultural sector after training
  • Suitability assessment
  • At least 50 percent professional activity in the agricultural sector in the case of part-time training (not with all providers)
