Alternative vehicle drives: Prepare for the future of the automotive industry

The automotive industry is one of the sectors that is currently undergoing the greatest transformation: Alternative vehicle drives have long been much more than just niche products; they are the technologies of the future and are increasingly pushing combustion engines into the background. Environmental awareness and sustainability are becoming increasingly relevant in society, and fossil fuel resources are limited and will therefore become finite in the foreseeable future. As a result, numerous car manufacturers have already planned their move away from combustion technology and publicly announced their exit - they will focus entirely on alternative vehicle drives in the future. This is often associated with a comprehensive adjustment of the business strategy, away from the classic car manufacturer to a mobility service provider.

The following alternative vehicle drives are currently available on the market:

1. hybrid drive

A combination of different drive principles or energy sources, usually gasoline/diesel with electric drive. A distinction is made between simple hybrids, in which the electric battery can only be charged while driving, and plug-in hybrids, which have a larger battery and can also be charged via a power cable.

2. electric drive

Powered exclusively by an electric battery, realistic range of the vehicles is 200 to 450 kilometers.

3. natural gas drive

Powered by natural gas, which is also a combustible, organic raw material, but is considered a more environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline and diesel.

4. fuel cell drive or hydrogen drive

Basically, these are electric cars, but they have a fuel cell with a hydrogen tank installed, which generates the electricity for the drive while driving. The filling station network for hydrogen is not yet fully developed in Europe.

If you work in the automotive industry and want to be equipped for the future, you cannot avoid acquiring knowledge about alternative vehicle drives through training. Specialists with this specific know-how will be in high demand in the future and will have a significant advantage over colleagues who have not undergone the relevant training.

Questions and answers

Alternative vehicle drives are technologies that represent alternatives to combustion engines (petrol or diesel). These can be, for example, electric drive, hybrid drive, natural gas drive or hydrogen drive.

The question of the best alternative vehicle drive is a highly charged debate. There are reasons both for and against electric drive, hydrogen drive and natural gas drive. It is clear that all technologies will continue to develop rapidly over the next few years and that combustion engines will not be a real alternative in the future.

The advantages of alternative vehicle drives are clearly their better environmental compatibility compared to combustion engines. The disadvantages include the often still high investment costs for alternative vehicle drives. In addition, nationwide filling station networks have not yet been established for all technologies (e.g. hydrogen). The range of electric cars is also limited.

Alternative vehicle drives are important in order to reduce CO2 emissions and thus pollutants in the environment. In addition, the concept of combustion engines (petrol/diesel) is based on the limited availability of crude oil, the supply of which is dwindling faster and faster due to the ever-increasing number of vehicles and will be used up at some point.
