The number of years of professional experience varies depending on the type of vocational education and training (VET) you have obtained. For example, you must have worked in the construction industry for at least two years if you have completed an apprenticeship in the construction industry, at least 4 years if you have completed an apprenticeship in a specialist field and a full 6 years of professional experience in the construction industry if you have other previous training but can provide proof that you have been able to realize projects in building ecology or building biology.
Building biologists are experts in all aspects of healthy and environmentally conscious building and living, providing both information and specific, practical advice. The building biologist checks the building concepts for environmental compatibility, makes any necessary changes and discusses these with construction companies and architects. They address factors such as ventilation, indoor toxins, thermal insulation, electrosmog, moisture, energy savings and allergies and advise the contractors on suitable building materials that can be recycled and do not contain any toxic, harmful or environmentally damaging substances or emissions. In order to carry out this work, specialists in building biology must not only have in-depth knowledge of biology and ecology, but also legal and technical knowledge of the construction industry. This combination makes the profession of building biologist very varied and interesting.
