Building physics - the physics of construction

Since the 1970s, building physics has become increasingly important in the construction industry. The thermal insulation and soundproofing of buildings - the latter especially with the increased construction of apartment buildings - has become more important, as have the associated building physics considerations in building planning. These topics are being researched and worked on in the fields of architecture and civil engineering at numerous universities and universities of applied sciences. It is often mistakenly assumed that building statics calculations are also part of this field of activity, but these are actually part of structural engineering. The following topics belong to the physics of construction:

  • Heat
  • Acoustics
  • Moisture
  • Fire protection
  • Daylight
  • Climate

Further education courses in this area are primarily aimed at construction professionals from the fields of architecture, civil engineering and geomatics. Would you like to find out more about this further education option (CAS or DAS at a university of applied sciences)? Are you looking for information about this further education or a specific university of applied sciences? On Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch you can quickly and easily find numerous interesting educational opportunities, guides and further links to career tips, etc.

Questions and answers

The certificate course (CAS) in building physics takes around four months with one day of lessons per week. If you would like to extend the CAS to a DAS (Diploma of Advanced Studies) and attend two additional modules, the study period is extended accordingly to around three semesters.
The CAS and DAS in Building Physics are aimed at professionals from the fields of engineering, architecture, building physics and building technology who explicitly wish to further their education and also have a university degree or comparable qualification and several years of professional experience in the construction industry. If you do not have one of these qualifications but would still like to attend a certificate or diploma course, you can still be admitted after an aptitude test. You can obtain more information on this directly from the Universities.
You can become a building physicist as a civil engineer UAS or FIT, architect UAS or in a professional field within building technology or construction planning with a higher professional qualification. Specialized continuing education, further training in building physics, such as a CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) or a DAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) also provides you with up-to-date practical knowledge in physical planning.
A DAS is a diploma course at a University of Applied Sciences, a Diploma of Advanced Studies, which is awarded 30 to 40 ECTS credits. As a rule, a CAS consists of two to four Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) certificate courses, which can be taken in any order and also independently of each other. For the DAS Biophysics, you have one compulsory module and two supplementary modules that you can choose from a small selection, such as: CAS Acoustics, CAS Fire Protection, CAS Professional Lighting Design in Architecture, CAS Building Physics in Timber Construction or Building Physics in Practice.
