Biotechnology studies at a UAS: specialists in the life sciences

In order to make improvements and drive forward developments in agriculture, the food industry, environmental protection, but above all in medicine, highly trained specialists from the field of biotechnology UAS are also required. Ein reines Bioverfahrenstechnik-Studium gibt es derzeit nicht. Es gibt jedoch Module innerhalb eines Studiums mit dem Schwerpunkt Bioprozessentwicklung und Bioingenieurwesen". Hier lernen die Studierenden die wichtigsten verfahrenstechnischen Arbeitsmethoden und Grundoperationen der Prozessindustrie kennen. Sie kennen die Charakterisierung grobdisperser Systeme, mechanische Trenn- und Zerkleinerungsverfahren, die mechanische Stoffvereinigung sowie die Grundlagen von Wärme- und Stoffübertragungsprozessen und können dieses Wissen bei der Auswahl, Bewertung und Auslegung verfahrenstechnischer Apparate, Anlagen und Prozesse in der Biotechnologie richtig anwenden bzw. übertragen. Dazu gehört auch ein Praktikum in der Bioverfahrenstechnik.

During a Biotechnology UAS degree program, you will complete a variety of internships so that you receive comprehensive practical training. You will complete an internship in the following subject areas: Microbiology; Chemistry; Physics; Computer Science; Measurement and Automation Technology; Bioprocess Engineering; Bioprocess Technology; Protein Purification; Biochemistry; Analytical Chemistry, Cell Culture Technology; Molecular Biology; Cell Biology; Bioprocess Informatics; Project Planning; Bioprocess Technology; Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Technology.

Ein Biotechnologe FH, eine Biotechnologin FH üben in der Regel folgende Tätigkeiten aus.

  • setzen natürlich vorkommende oder gentechnisch veränderte Mikroorganismen, Zellkulturen und Enzyme ein, um Produkte wie Insulin oder Backhefe herzustellen
  • entwickeln und produzieren eine Vielzahl von Wirkstoffen und Arzneimitteln
  • evaluieren verschiedene Produktionsverfahren bis hin zur Arzneimittelformulierung
  • übertragen die im Labor gewonnenen Erkenntnisse schrittweise auf die Anforderungen der industriellen Produktion
  • sind verantwortlich für die Zulassung und das Qualitätsmanagement in der Produktion
  • entwickeln und optimieren biotechnologische Verfahren mit Mikroorganismen, tierischen und menschlichen Zellen und übertragen diese vom Labor in industrielle Produktionsanlagen
  • beherrschen und nutzen die Verfahrensschritte des "Downstream Processing", mit denen die biotechnologisch hergestellten Rohprodukte in eine marktfähige Form überführt werden
  • Bioanalytik, Biosicherheit, Forschung und Entwicklung
  • übernehmen wichtige Funktionen zwischen dem Management und dem technischen und Produktionspersonal

Für den Biotechnologie Bachelor sind folgende persönliche Voraussetzungen erforderlich:

  • Analytisch-konzeptionelle Fähigkeiten
  • präzise Arbeitsweise
  • Fähigkeit, Projekte zu entwickeln, durchzuführen und zu kontrollieren
  • Interesse an physikalischen Prozessen
  • Freude am Forschen

The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology UAS degree program comprises at least 180 ECTS, which are required for graduation. The duration in which you achieve this is of secondary importance, usually double the standard period of study is specified as the upper limit. Please enquire about this directly at the relevant University of Applied Sciences. The standard period of study to become a biotechnologist is six semesters for full-time study and eight to ten semesters for part-time study. This means that if you study full-time, you will need to obtain 28 to 32 ECTS credits to complete the course within three years, which corresponds to a workload of around 30 lessons per week and approximately one hour of preparation and revision time per lesson. A biotechnology degree course can therefore take different lengths of time.

After completing a biotechnology UAS degree, a wide range of interesting career opportunities are open to you, for example in the cosmetics industry and research institutions, in hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry, in bioanalytical laboratories, engineering companies, at environmental agencies, in consulting, service and planning companies, at equipment manufacturers and suppliers of diagnostic and laboratory equipment as well as at regulatory and licensing authorities. The biotechnology job prospects are therefore very diverse.

A Matura is required for a Biotechnology UAS degree course; in the case of foreign diplomas, the Universities will provide you with information on admission options. If you have a Federal VET Diploma related to biotechnology, for example in a medical, technical, pharmaceutical, biological or chemical profession, you can be admitted directly to the course. If you have a Federal Vocational Baccalaureate in a field unrelated to biotechnology, you must have one year of work experience in a biotechnology environment, as must people with a Baccalaureate. High school graduates also have the option of completing an eight-semester course of study with an integrated internship without the practical experience required to study biotechnology.
