Tipps und Entscheidungshilfen für die Ausbildungswahl

The range of courses in book production is very extensive and is led by renowned Swiss schools of design and art. The different courses vary greatly. It is therefore advisable to study and compare the individual courses on offer in detail before making a definitive course registration.

Participants can expect from a solid course in the field of binding techniques or cardboard packaging that they will learn all known techniques for binding books and will be able to use them independently after successfully completing the course. In addition, creative ideas should already be able to be realized during the workshop. This gives graduates the opportunity to work with the various tools and cutting machines and learn how to use them.

It is not uncommon for book production courses to form part of more comprehensive training courses in the field of printing and bookbinding technology. In particular, the course in printing and bookbinding techniques (cert.) should be mentioned here. The certificate course consists of the following subject workshops, each of which can also be completed independently:

  • Bookbinding
  • Cardboard box
  • Lithography
  • Lithography
  • Screen printing
  • Typography
  • Screen printing with specific data handling
  • Copperplate printing
  • Printmaking

Depending on the module, what you learn can be very useful as an additional qualification in creative and design professions or can be used and implemented in your free time.

Further information on the individual training courses on bookbinding technology or printing technology can be found on the comprehensive education portal Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch. Questions and answers

Manual printing and bookbinding techniques fall under the same subject area, but this does not necessarily mean that you will also learn printing techniques on a bookbinding course. Schools often offer different courses in this area, such as screen printing, lithography, copperplate printing or bookbinding. If you attend a printing course first, you will then have the opportunity to bind the printed products as a book in another course. Ask the design schools directly for the current list of courses.

The duration of a bookbinding course can be between two days and six months, depending on the chosen intensity, previous knowledge and focus.

You have the opportunity to learn the bookbinding technique as part of basic training as a print media processor Federal VET Diploma, but you can also learn the art of bookbinding as part of special continuing education, further training.

Of course, a course on bookbinding technology not only teaches you theoretical knowledge, but also gives you the opportunity to work practically so that you can work independently once you have completed your training. You will learn which materials, tools and machines you need and how to use them properly. You will carry out various tasks under supervision and can learn from mistakes and make changes at any time.

No prior knowledge is required for introductory courses in bookbinding technology, but for more advanced courses such as continuation or advanced courses, of course, as these build on the knowledge of the basic course.
