Experiential educator: using experiences to compensate for educational deficits

Experiential education is being used more and more frequently and is often a good way of compensating for educational deficits in predominantly young people. Educational goals are achieved through experiences and sometimes extreme situations, such as climbing at a certain height.

In experiential education, children and young people are usually taken out into nature to experience something out of the ordinary. Experiential education is also used for the following conditions: deterioration of physical fitness, lack of care, lack of initiative and spontaneity and lack of human sympathy. Through physical activity, helping others and the dependence of one person on another, the social skills of young people and children are enhanced.

Training to become an experiential educator can be completed as a postgraduate course after graduating from a university of applied sciences and culminates in a school certificate. The training starts with a three-day introductory seminar, followed by a one-week basic course. The training concludes with a three-day final seminar.

The training course for experiential educators imparts pedagogical and methodological qualifications that enable participants to carry out outdoor training and experiential education seminars after completing the course and adapt them to the respective target group.

The course to become an experiential educator concludes with an internal school certificate after proof of performance. However, it is also possible for people who work or would like to work in adult education to acquire an additional qualification with the SVEB 1 certificate "Conducting learning events with adults", which is recognized throughout Switzerland.
