Specialist fitter (certified) - further training for carpentry professionals

The specialist fitter is assigned demanding tasks in the area of wood assembly by the project management. This also includes the logistical part, which is often a great responsibility and challenge. These assembly jobs require comprehensive economic and professional thinking. The current noise and fire protection standards must also be observed. The fitters are familiar with the various fastening techniques used in timber construction and ensure occupational safety and the protection of the health of all those involved at every stage. They are also competent and friendly in their dealings with clients.

Training as a specialist fitter takes one semester (6 months) and is completed with an association certificate, which is highly regarded by employers throughout the country. Participants receive comprehensive training in the following topics:

  • Teamwork and behavior towards employees and trainees
  • Communication
  • Analysis and solutions of situations during assembly
  • Decision-making processes and their implementation on the assembly line
  • Preparation of orders
  • Execution of orders
  • Management of assembly orders

Graduates with basic training as a carpenter must have 1 year of professional experience at the start of further training. Practical carpenters should already have 5 years of professional experience, 3 of which must have been in assembly. If no apprenticeship as a carpenter can be demonstrated, 10 years of practical carpentry experience (including 5 years as a fitter) must be proven.

Questions and answers

After completing the training, participants receive the "VSSM Specialist Fitter" or "VSSM Specialist Fitter" diploma from the Association of Swiss Master Joiners and Furniture Manufacturers.

The course to become a specialist fitter comprises a total of 200 lessons, which are spread over around six months. There are also hours for self-study, exam preparation and the final exam itself.

A specialist fitter accepts installation orders from the project management and is responsible for their professional execution. He/she is responsible for the organization of assembly logistics, carries out complex monthly orders economically or monitors their execution.

The costs for the Fachmonteur / Fachmonteurin course can vary from school to school, but at HWS they amount to CHF 4,650 for 2018. However, these costs are extremely generously supported by VSSM / MAEK and ZPK (up to CHF 3,500). You will receive more detailed information directly from the school.

Participants in continuing education, further training to become a specialist fitter deal with topics such as preparing and implementing assembly work, managing assembly work, preparing the execution of orders and making and implementing decisions. You will also be taught skills that will enable you to competently manage apprentices and employees, communicate effectively, analyze a wide variety of situations and solve potential problems or conflicts.

Carpenters Federal VET Diploma and carpenters Federal VET Diploma who have at least one year of professional experience as a fitter, as well as carpentry trainees Federal VET Diploma and woodworkers Federal VET Diploma with five years of professional experience, three of which as a fitter, are admitted to the specialist fitter training course. Fitters who have not completed an apprenticeship but have ten years of professional experience, half of which as a fitter, can also take part in the training.

The Weiterbildungszentrum Lenzburg (wbz) is a professional course and training provider in the fields of automotive engineering, facility management and maintenance, caretaking, woodworking (carpenters, joiners), hotel housekeeping, maintenance, mechanical engineering/automation, metal construction, solar technology and plant services.
