Computer scientist CHE: ICT strategists for companies and customers

Computer scientists CHE (formerly computer science technicians CHE) have a broad basic knowledge of operating systems, networks, computer technology, system architecture, databases, IT security as well as web, hardware and software engineering. They plan, implement and manage ICT systems and processes and usually work at middle management level. They take on specialist and management tasks in IT projects of all sizes and can lead teams. CHE IT technicians are now known as "CHE computer scientists". They also continuously develop ICT applications in line with the corporate strategy and ensure that business objectives are achieved.

RelevanceThe IT sector is one of the key disciplines of digitalization. In addition to the challenges of collecting, managing, processing and handling ever-larger volumes of data, companies are increasingly confronted with the implementation of topics such as automation, artificial intelligence (AI) and mixed reality (MR). The IT sector is affected by a serious shortage of skilled workers - and the trend is rising. IT specialists, such as computer scientists CHE (formerly computer science technicians CHE), with sound theoretical knowledge and relevant work experience are therefore in demand.

Learning contentThe CHE Computer Science course provides basic knowledge in computer science, programming, mathematics, physics, project management, ICT operating systems, networks, databases, automation, data protection and IT security. Most schools then offer various specializations, for example in application development, systems engineering, network technology, technical informatics, cyber security or telecommunications, in which subject-specific topics are covered in greater depth.

ActivityComputer scientists CHE (formerly computer science technicians CHE) are employed in company IT departments, IT companies, IT consulting firms or in industry. Possible activities are: Project managers, support managers, network and database administrators or advisory activities with customers. There is also the possibility of becoming self-employed.

Target groupPeople with a strong analytical and networked mindset and vocational education and training (VET) in computer science, electrical engineering, mediamatics, telematics or automation who want to play a leading role in the initiation, implementation and support of IT applications are in the right place with CHE computer science training.

The degree course in computer science at a university of applied sciences (HF) can or could be chosen with various specializations. The following specializations were available for the computer scientist HF / computer scientist HF course:

  • System technology
  • Application development
  • Computer engineering

In addition, the (previous) specializations for the HF IT technician course (formerly HF IT technician) application development, systems engineering and IT engineering have been removed from the previous framework curriculum.

However, under certain conditions, schools can offer their own specializations. However, this does not change the title of the course.

Most schools offer courses to become an HF computer scientist (formerly HF computer science technician), mainly on a part-time basis, while other schools also offer full-time courses. The full-time HF computer science course takes two years, the part-time course takes three to three and a half years.
