Designing and developing systems and machines is the main task of design engineering. As a technician in this position is employed in middle management, there are other exciting and challenging activities such as project management and managing employees.

As a worker in construction technology, you embody the link between engineers and technical workers. On the one hand, you will be involved in project planning and contribute ideas and suggestions based on your specialist knowledge. On the other hand, you coordinate and manage the workers carrying out the work, visit construction sites and ensure that projects are completed on time and according to plan. You will maintain contact with customers and find a balance between their wishes and the technically feasible and economically viable options.

Note: Since fall 2022, the HF technician courses (formerly "Techniker HF Fachrichtung") have been given a separate framework curriculum and a new title for each specialization. For example, the course "Technician HF Mechanical Engineering" is now called "Mechanical Engineering Technician HF". In addition, the specializations have been abolished.

Questions and answers

To train at a College of Higher Education (CHE) in construction technology, you need a vocational qualification with Federal VET Diploma or equivalent knowledge, as well as professional experience in industry, a service company or another economic sector. The following professional qualifications are recognized: Car mechanic, machine mechanic, plant and apparatus engineer, machine draftsman, technical model maker, polymechanic, production mechanic, automation technician, design engineer, physics laboratory technician, mold maker and plastics technologist. Applicants with a different educational qualification must undergo an aptitude test. Those without a Federal Vocational Baccalaureate are advised to attend a preparatory course on the basics of mathematics.

After successfully completing your training in construction technology and passing the examinations, you will be awarded the protected title of "Certified Technician CHE Mechanical Engineering".

Training at a College of Higher Education in construction technology is designed to be part-time and takes three years. Up to the intermediate diploma after the third semester, subject-specific basics and general education are taught, after which the students devote a further three semesters to their specialist training, which concludes with a diploma examination and diploma thesis. Subjects in the specialist course include design theory, standards theory, strength theory, CAx technologies, fluid technology, machine elements, drive and gear technology, construction and design, plastics technology, machine technology and engineering.
