In Switzerland, numerous safety regulations apply in the area of food safety. In particular, when it comes to food contact materials such as packaging, it is extremely important for all manufacturers to comply precisely with the regulations. Those responsible for food production must therefore be able to professionally and competently assess and document which materials the materials come into contact with and what they are packaged with. In addition, the manufacturer or a person appointed by the manufacturer is required to issue declarations of conformity. These confirm that the equipment, materials, machines and production and packaging facilities meet all requirements.

In a course on food safety, participants learn about the legal basis for food contact materials and how contact materials are analyzed and tested. SVI checklists are used, which are prescribed by the Swiss Packaging Institute. The checklist contains all the important criteria that food packaging must meet and those responsible can use this list to analyze and confirm all points. Another important course content is, for example, modeling - a screening method that helps managers and manufacturers to evaluate packaging regulations in terms of risks, design, consumer exposure and to calculate the chemical migration of materials in contact with food. There are various tools that are explained in the training to enable a proper risk assessment.

The target group for the food safety courses are managers in the food industry and manufacturers or producers themselves.

Food safety is often used as a synonym for food hygiene. The aim of food safety is to ensure that food is safe for the end consumer and is suitable and harmless for consumption.

The courses in food safety vary in length - depending on the provider, they last from a few hours to a few days. Some Universities also offer part-time continuing education, further training courses (e.g. CAS Certificate of Advanced Studies), which last up to a year (approx. 18 course days). It is best to contact the school of your choice directly for precise information on the duration of the course.

Food safety includes processes that monitor the safe preparation, handling, packaging and storage of food.
