Another example of a marketing specialist with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education: CHF 458,000 more salary until retirement

Marco is 27 years old and, after completing his apprenticeship, worked as a customer service clerk for a regional railroad company in Central Switzerland. Two years ago, as part of a restructuring process, he was offered the opportunity to develop his career in marketing. As he had already been interested in local projects such as tourism events and sponsoring sports events, he immediately accepted. His first step was to attend a Markom course to learn the most important basics. He was then allowed to switch to the marketing department and is now gaining his first experience as an assistant to the campaign manager. He is also attending a one-year course to obtain a Federal Diploma of Higher Education as a marketing specialist. If he passes the Federal Professional Examination next year, he will then be able to take responsibility for some local projects.

Financial benefits of continuing education, further training as a marketing specialist

As a marketing specialist, Marco will receive around CHF 1,050 more per month than before and will therefore have at least CHF 458,000 more at his disposal by the time he retires than if he had not done any continuing education, further training.

If he is also given the opportunity to take on his first management role in the marketing team at the age of 31, a further CHF 447,576 will be added by the time he retires.

And the marketing specialist's salary can still increase significantly, as this theoretical calculation does not take into account any further pay rises, promotions or interest on savings.

Calculation in detail

Continuing education, further training Marketing Assistant Markom

  • 5 months part-time
  • School fees, documents: CHF 2,300 minus CHF 1,150 federal contribution = CHF 1,150
  • Exam fee: CHF 390
  • Total training costs: CHF 1'540

Continuing education, further training marketing specialist:

  • 15 months part-time
  • School fees, documents: CHF 9,200 minus CHF 4,600 federal contribution = CHF 4,600
  • Federal examination fee: CHF 2,500
  • Total training costs: CHF 7'100

Wage difference and yield calculation:

  • Difference in salary between the position as a commercial clerk (public transport) and the position as a marketing specialist: CHF 1,050 per month = CHF 12,600 per year
  • He recoups the total training costs of CHF 8,640 (CHF 1,540 + CHF 7,100) with his higher salary as a marketing specialist in just over 8 months (CHF 8,640 / CHF 1,050 per month = 8.2 months)
  • In the remaining 37 years until his retirement (28 to 65), this additional income will add up to CHF 466,200 (37 x CHF 12,600 = CHF 466,200)
  • If the training costs are deducted from this additional income, an additional sum of around CHF 457,560 remains at his disposal(CHF 466'200 - CHF 8'640 = CHF 457'560)
