MAS Software Engineering (FH): For software developers with a higher education qualification

Would you like to continue your education in a part-time postgraduate course and obtain a Master of Advanced Studies MAS Software Engineering? If so, you should already be working in software development and aim to professionalize and further develop your skills. As an admission requirement for a postgraduate course at a university of applied sciences, you must generally also have a university degree or equivalent proof of many years of practical experience and, in this case, basic programming experience.

In this continuing education course, you will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of object-oriented software development, operating systems, requirements engineering, programming with Java, object-oriented modeling practice and project management. Software processes, programming in C++, algorithms and data structures, software architectures, databases, OOD, XML technologies, network programming, web frameworks, software testing, agile software development and many other key topics are also covered in the MAS Software Engineering.

This four-semester certificate course assumes that participants have the personal commitment and the time budget required to complete this course. Anyone interested in this MAS in Software Engineering should be aware that this course is quite intensive, requiring attendance at two evenings of classroom teaching and around 10 hours of self-study per week. The three semesters of study are followed by the Master's thesis, which takes around 400 hours to complete.

The MAS Software Engineering Master's degree program is a part-time continuing education, further training program that aims to enable practitioners to continue working full-time. Classroom teaching therefore takes place two evenings a week, starting at 5.15 p.m. (as at the start of the course in 2018). Please contact the Universities for information on the current study dates.

Programming experience is essential for participation in the MAS Software Engineering. If you want to get started in this field as a career changer and do not have sufficient programming skills before starting the Master's program, you can acquire them in a preliminary course. Pre-courses in programming with C and Java can be attended in preparation for the degree course. Information on this can be obtained from the Director of Studies via our contact form.

People without a university degree can also take part in the MAS Software Engineering, provided they have very good programming skills as a professional practitioner. The Director of Studies decides on admission on an individual basis.

The MAS Software Engineering is divided into three certificate courses (CAS): Software Engineering Foundation, Software Engineering Intermediate and Software Engineering Advanced. The focus is on the following subject areas: Unix operating systems, programming in C++, project management, Windows operating systems, programming Java, introduction to requirements engineering, object-oriented modeling practice, basics of operating systems, working in teams, introduction to object-oriented software development, algorithms and data structures, cloud computing, communication in distributed systems, project automation, C# and .net, basics of web technologies, interaction design, database basics, object-oriented design OOD, parallel programming, Java advanced programming, functional programming, performant teams, process communication model, software engineering for mobile platforms, agile software development, quality management, Internet of Things basics, requirements engineering advanced, architecture of distributed systems, application security, software testing, legal aspects. There is also the Master's thesis.

The complete Master's degree program MAS Software Engineering comprises 60 ETCS, which represents a total workload of around 1,500 to 1,800 hours, including lectures, exercises, self-study, assessments and Master's thesis. This means a workload of around 14 to 18 hours per week. The course takes 2.5 years to complete.

After completing the MAS Software Engineering, graduates have a sound knowledge of technology, are familiar with modern software engineering methods and are able to handle software projects professionally across all project phases. The course has a strong practical focus and is taught by experienced lecturers from industry and academia.
