Medical Team Leader: management position in medical practice

The course for prospective medical team leaders SVMB enables graduates to work in a middle management position in medical practices, clinics, organizations, insurance companies or health insurance funds in the future and to supplement their clinical-medical know-how with management and business management knowledge. At insurance companies and health insurance funds, they work in case management as group leaders, while in medical practices they are entrusted with personnel management, human resources, quality assurance, income management and practice marketing.

A degree in a medical profession, such as a nursing specialist, pharmaceutical assistant, medical practice assistant MPA, dental assistant DA, veterinary practice assistant TPA, medical assistant DVSA or similar, or a higher degree in the medical field and at least two years of relevant professional experience after basic vocational training, are the best prerequisites for starting the "Medical Team Leader" course with a certificate from the Swiss Association of Medical Vocational Schools (SVMB). This course teaches you the modules "Personnel Management", "Accounting", "Quality Management in the Medical Practice" and "Practice Management", which are the admission requirements for the federal professional examination (BP) "Medical Practice Coordinator with federal certificate". The modules Chronic Care Management I and II, which you can also take at the relevant schools, are also required for admission to the BP.

The specialist training course lasts two semesters and is completed alongside your job, so that you can continue to work, possibly with a reduced workload. Different course models are available to you depending on the school. For the Medical Team Leader SVMB course, for example, you attend classes two evenings, one afternoon or one Saturday per week and complete two module examinations per semester. If you pass four module examinations, you are deemed to have passed the diploma examination and new opportunities open up for you as a team leader in a medical practice.

Questions and answers

It is not possible to take the examinations for the "SVMB Medical Team Leader" training course in a language other than German. The examination area is the whole of German-speaking Switzerland and the examination language is exclusively German (regulations Art. 12. 2).

The "Medical Team Leader SVMB" diploma examination does not consist of a final examination, as is often the case, but is considered passed if you have acquired all four compulsory module qualifications. You receive this qualification after each module with a corresponding module examination, which is taken in writing and lasts between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on the subject. All four modules (personnel management, practice management, accounting and quality management in the medical practice) are graded with equal weighting and result in the average diploma grade.

The start dates of the continuing education, further training "Medical Team Leader SVMB" vary depending on the training provider. Some schools allow you to start with any module, giving you four start dates per year. At other schools, you can only start twice a year.

After completing the course and passing all four module examinations, you will be awarded the SVMB diploma (Swiss Association of Medical Vocational Schools) "SVMB Medical Team Leader" or "SVMB Medical Team Leader".

Persons who hold a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training in the following professions are admitted to the module examinations of the "Medical Team Leader SVMB" course: Medical Practice Assistant (MPA), Veterinary Practice Assistant (TPA), Dental Assistant (DA), a Medical Assistant Diploma DVSA or other equivalent training at upper-secondary level in the healthcare sector. Persons with a degree at continuing education and training / tertiary level for the following professions are also admitted: Nursing specialist CHE. An additional requirement for all professions is at least two years of vocational education and training (VET) in a medical practice or medical organization. This can be 100% in a medical organization or a correspondingly longer professional experience with a lower workload after completing basic training. Admission must be clarified at the time of registration.
