Orthoptics training - Help people with visual impairments

Are you fascinated by the organ of sight? Would you like to work professionally for people who suffer from eye disorders? Training at a higher technical college (HF) in the field of orthoptics could therefore be a suitable training opportunity for you. Orthoptists work in close cooperation with ophthalmologists and examine patients suffering from eye disorders such as strabismus or eye muscle disorders on their instructions. Your specialist expertise, which you will acquire during your three-year training in orthoptics, will enable you to make well-founded diagnoses. You will also identify possible causes of the existing disorder and prescribe appropriate therapeutic measures and medication for the patients concerned.

It is very important that you also train your social skills and develop personally so that you can communicate your diagnoses to your patients with empathy and understanding. You also have technical aids at your disposal with which you can check various factors such as visual acuity, squint angle or the sense of color in your patients' eyes. As an orthoptics specialist, you will also carry out administrative work and write reports on the health of the people you treat.

Training to become an orthoptist takes three years full-time and concludes with the federally recognized title of "Certified Orthoptist HF". During your training, you will be taught the following subjects, among others:

  • Assessment of findings
  • Work processes
  • Diagnosis
  • Social behavior
  • Quality promotion
  • Planning and implementation of therapies
  • Communication
  • Professional development

Train to become a competent specialist in the field of orthoptics. You can find more information, competent providers and contacts at Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch in the Health section.

Questions and answers

In order to be admitted to the Orthoptics CHE degree program, you must first complete an aptitude assessment, which assesses your social, personal and professional skills. This involves first taking an aptitude test and then completing an aptitude internship, which lasts at least two days and should lead to a self-assessment and assessment by others. Participants then submit a dossier, which is required for the subsequent aptitude interview.

The Orthoptics course at the College of Higher Education is only possible as a full-time course, not as a part-time course.

Theory and practice alternate in the orthoptics CHE course, so that you receive both a basic school education and gain practical experience. You will spend 40 percent of your time attending theoretical classes at the school and the remaining 60 percent working in the eye clinic of an internship company, such as the University Hospital Basel, the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen, the University Hospital Zurich, the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, the Inselspital Bern or the Eye Day Clinic Heerbrugg. The theoretical and practical training to become a qualified orthoptist CHE takes place in blocks.

Training at a College of Higher Education for the Orthoptics CHE course can be started after at least three years of vocational education and training (VET), as well as after completing a Specialized School, Diploma Secondary School or a Matura.

The training in orthoptics lasts three years. It begins every two years in September (2016 / 2018 / 2020 /...) and concludes with the federal title of "Certified Orthoptist CHE".
