Herbal medicine training: learn more about the wonders of nature

Nature gives us so many ways to heal illnesses and ailments with herbs and plants, but we are relying more and more on synthetic medicines, which unfortunately do not often have the desired effect. More and more people are turning to the ancient science of herbal medicine, also known as phytotherapy. In this way, illnesses and pain can be treated and often cured naturally, even in children and during pregnancy.

Questions and answers

There is no regulated course that defines the content, duration and teaching methods for all schools in the same way. Each school offers its very own programs, which it can design as it sees fit. This means that there are a large number of very different courses on offer in herbal medicine, which can vary considerably. For example, there are seminars that last just one day and introduce you to the basics of phytotherapy. However, you can also opt for a course that provides you with comprehensive training in this field over a period of around twelve months. It is therefore up to you to decide how much time and energy you want to invest in this continuing education, further training and what you want to learn.

Herbal medicine, also known as phytotherapy, distinguishes between Traditional European Medicine (TEN) or Western therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Understandably, native medicinal plants are only used to a limited extent in TCM. As most schools offer various courses on this subject, it is worth asking directly for a course on indigenous medicinal herbs (via the contact form).

Each school determines its own course program for herbal medicine, so the content taught can vary greatly. For example, the following topics can be taught in a comprehensive specialist training course in the field of phytotherapy:

Not everyone who attends a course on herbal medicine wants to or is able to work in this field. For this reason, seminars are of course also offered that familiarize you, more or less intensively, with the healing effects of plants. In such a course you will learn, for example, how to make tinctures, ointments and teas from native medicinal plants and herbs and what you need to bear in mind when using them.

In order to be able to bill the therapy sessions directly to your supplementary health insurance, you need to be recognized by your health insurance. You will usually receive this if you meet the ASCA or EMR guidelines. Recognition of the herbal medicine or western phytotherapy method requires at least 300 hours of training. However, you can only register for this method if you already have comprehensive training in complementary medicine or conventional medicine. In Switzerland, herbal medicine training courses with a focus on phytotherapy, as part of naturopathy, are offered by various schools in different courses. Some of these courses are aimed exclusively at people from the healthcare sector with previous training in conventional medicine, while others are aimed at anyone interested, even without any previous knowledge of medicine or alternative medicine. Therefore, please contact the providers you are interested in directly and ask about the target groups of the individual herbal medicine training courses.

Courses in phytotherapy/herbal medicine are part of many naturopathic training programs such as Ayurveda, Traditional European Medicine TEN or Chinese Medicine. Each of these medical systems includes extensive application knowledge about the effects of medicinal plants (medicinal herbs). Many of these courses can also be taken individually and there are individual providers who specialize exclusively in herbal medicine. The courses are therefore suitable for career changers in the health sector as well as for professionals with training in naturopathy or conventional medicine. They last one to three years. The course modules are spread regularly throughout the year so that the plants can be observed over the entire annual cycle. The courses conclude with the school's own diplomas, most of which are recognized as continuing education, further training according to EMR or ASCA for people with a recognized previous education.
