Questions and answers

In order to be admitted to the Photonics Bachelor's degree course, you must have a Federal Vocational Baccalaureate in Engineering, Architecture, Life Science, formerly Technical BM with an apprenticeship in the technical field or a Federal Vocational Baccalaureate, Specialized Baccalaureate or comparable certificate with at least one year of relevant professional experience at the start of the course or as an internship integrated into the course. You should also have a good knowledge of German and English at FCE level (First Certificate in English).

For both full-time and part-time studies, a practical component of around 20 percent is guaranteed, consisting of practical work and laboratory work. In addition, the photonics degree program may include a higher proportion of practical work during an integrated internship.

It is certainly possible to work during the photonics degree course, but mainly if you are studying part-time. It is recommended that you do not work more than 60 percent of the time during your Bachelor's degree. If you are studying full-time, you will have classes 3.5 days a week; if you are studying part-time, you will have classes two days a week.

After successfully completing the photonics course, graduates are awarded the "Bachelor of Science FHO in Photonics".

The photonics degree program teaches you the basics of photonics as well as specializations and the modules business administration, project management, entrepreneurship and innovation. Students also attend modules such as: Linear Algebra, Computer Science, Electronics, Optics, Physics, Optical Metrology, Design, Signal Processing, Optoelectronics, Mathematics for Optics and Electronics, Materials in Optics and Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Image Processing, Control Engineering, Laser Technology, Optical Sensor Technology, Light and Lighting Technology, Product Development, Camera and Display Technology, Infrared Technology, Production Engineering, Optical Systems as well as 3D Image Processing, Circuit Realization, Optical Design, Lasers and Materials. There are also practical projects, laboratory work, project work and Bachelor's theses.

The photonics course with a Bachelor's degree can be completed as a full-time course within three years or as a part-time course within four semesters.
