Rehab technician: an apprenticeship with prospects of success

Training to become a rehabilitation technician is primarily aimed at people who work in the specialist rehabilitation trade. During their training, rehabilitation technicians mainly learn how to provide assistive devices. The continuous and constant expansion of know-how in rehabilitation is then the basis for good work on the part of the rehabilitation technician. If you already work or have worked in the medical sector, a training course or course in rehabilitation technology could certainly be an option for you.

Questions and answers

Training to become a specialist in rehabilitation technology with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education usually takes one year. It takes place on a part-time basis.

Continuing education, further training and certification as a rehabilitation technician requires participants to have basic medical knowledge, particularly in anatomy and clinical pictures. For this reason, it is primarily aimed at specialists from the fields of nursing, medicine and therapy. For continuing education, further training for the Federal Diploma of Higher Education (FPE) in rehabilitation technology with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education, a completed apprenticeship, a school-leaving certificate or an equivalent qualification is required, as well as at least two years of practical experience in a rehabilitation company. Anyone who does not have one of these certificates must have at least six years of professional experience in the rehabilitation sector. In order to take the Federal Professional Examination, three module qualifications must also be presented and there must be no entry in the central criminal register.
Each school determines the content of a rehabilitation technician course independently, which means that it can vary greatly, especially in the case of certificate courses. However, courses that prepare students for federal examinations, such as the Federal Professional Examination for Rehabilitation Technicians (FPE), are taught in accordance with the examination regulations. These require participants to complete three modules:
  • Medical understanding and comprehension
  • Specialist knowledge (control instruments, insurance-relevant processes, application of monitoring instruments, etc.)
  • Wheelchair supply
