Senior dance: awakening the joy of movement and dance in older people

Dancing is much more than just moving to the rhythm of the music. Dancing can be, for example, a performing art, a sport, a ritual or custom, a profession (e.g. ballerina, choreographer or dance teacher) or a form of therapy. Nevertheless, dance is first and foremost a form of social interaction and, for the majority of practitioners, a relaxed pastime that can be used to express feelings. It is enjoyable and fun at the same time and also has a strenuous component due to the necessary body tension in the movements, which has a positive effect on circulation and health. Factors that are important for young people, but especially for older people.

Whether foxtrot, Viennese waltz, ballet, boogie-woogie, rock 'n' roll, salsa, tap or line dance - the world of dance offers a wide range of dance forms and styles, with one or the other being more distinctive and popular depending on the country and culture. The range of dance training courses is just as broad. There are courses for individuals, couples or groups, beginners, advanced and professionals, as well as courses for children, young people, adults and senior citizens. Senior dance training is aimed at people aged 60 and over. Here, participants have the opportunity to pursue their joy or passion for dancing either alone or with a partner. Depending on the type of course, one or more dance forms are covered. You will be taught the relevant steps and movements so that you can move rhythmically to the music.

Would you prefer to train as a dance teacher and offer senior dances yourself?

Senior dance training can also be aimed at people who are interested in teaching seniors to dance and teaching senior dances. Senior dance training provides you with the necessary didactic skills. You will learn what it means to teach seniors and what you need to pay particular attention to (for example, allowing enough time for warming up). Have you already gained dance experience (professionally or as a hobby) or are you even a qualified dance teacher and would like to offer and teach senior dances independently?

Then perhaps the right training course for you is just what you need. Here on the leading Swiss education platform Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch you will find a large selection of suitable providers. Use the inquiry form to order the online, free and comprehensive course documents or contact the provider of your choice and get personal advice. Questions and answers

The requirements for completing a senior dance course can vary depending on the provider, i.e. the dance school. The following points are usually required:

  • Above all, enjoy rhythmic movement to music
  • Dance experience is an advantage, but not essential
  • Good sense of body and rhythm
  • Good coordination skills and a quick grasp of things
  • For prospective teachers: Enjoy dealing with the 60+ generation
  • For prospective teachers: Teaching experience is an advantage
  • Good physical condition and health
  • Good balance
  • For prospective senior dance teachers: First aid knowledge

For detailed and individual information on the requirement criteria, please contact the provider of your choice directly. You can contact the respective school quickly and easily using the inquiry form.

Depending on the provider and course or training, the steps to one or more dances are looked at and taught. This can be samba, salsa, waltz, rock 'n' roll, tango, foxtrot or rumba, for example.

In senior dance training, particular attention is paid to choosing simple dance steps or deliberately small step sequences that can also be performed alone, i.e. without a dance partner.

Are you interested in completing a senior dance course so that you can then teach independently and competently? Then, depending on the provider, you may have to undergo an aptitude test.

Here you will be judged on whether you have enough musical and dancing flair and a good sense of rhythm to teach seniors how to dance.

Depending on the case, such a suitability assessment may be subject to a fee. Please contact the respective provider in advance to find out what (extra) costs you can expect.

The duration of senior dance training for prospective dance teachers in this field can vary depending on the provider.

As a rule, it lasts approx. 12 days. Depending on previous training and dance experience, a shortened course of approx. 8 days is also possible.

Senior dance training is aimed at individuals/private individuals who want to learn to dance for fun. In this case, you should enjoy movement and music.

On the other hand, senior dance training is aimed at people who would like to work in this field as a teacher. They should already have professional or amateur dance experience. Ideally, they should have a background in dance and movement and enjoy these areas. Such people can be, for example, sports teachers, gymnastics teachers, adult sports instructors in dance sport, J+S gymnastics instructors, movement teachers or those who have equivalent training or experience.
