Become a wine and/or beer connoisseur in a sommelier course

If wine, beer or other spirits are on the drinks menu in a restaurant or other catering establishment, guests expect professional advice. Which wine goes with my dish? Which wine do you recommend? Is this wine sweet or dry? Do you have heavy wines? What is the bouquet of this wine like? What is the difference between this beer and this one? Service staff, bartenders and even employees in a drinks and spirits shop are confronted with these and similar questions every day. Comprehensive knowledge is required to be able to provide comprehensive and professional advice. Numerous gastronomy schools therefore offer recommended sommelier courses, which vary depending on the focus. Both beer courses and wine courses are offered for those with little prior knowledge as well as for advanced gastronomy professionals. Depending on the course level, participants are given a brief or in-depth introduction to systematic tasting according to international standards (WSET®). Different grape varieties are compared and the growing regions and methods are explained. Advanced courses also deal in detail with classic and modern combinations of food and wine/beer, individual grape varieties and innovative and professional advice for guests. In recent years, beer in particular has moved away from its reputation as a typical pub and party drink. Innovative Swiss breweries offer a wide variety of beer specialties, which have long been enjoyed in upscale restaurants. It is here in particular that participants in a sommelier course learn everything they need to know to give good and professional advice to their guests and customers.

Questions and answers

Those who pass the written examination, the sensory, tasting and tasting part of the examination and the oral examination receive the "Spirits Sommelier" certificate, as well as the certificate from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust London - WSET® Level 2, Award in Spirits, which is internationally recognized.

In the second part of the wine sommelier course (advanced course), participants acquire extensive knowledge about Swiss pigs, international viticulture and grape varieties from all over the world. However, differentiated specialist knowledge about the climate, the growing regions, the wine varieties, the location and the soil procurement are taught about the wine countries Switzerland, Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Austria, Greece and the New World.

Of course, a sommelier course does not have to deal exclusively with wine, but can also be chosen with a focus on beer. After passing examinations including professional beer tapping, sensory analysis, tasting and tasting, a written and an oral examination, the "Beer Sommelier®" certificate is awarded.

A sommelier course can have a very different duration, depending on which beverage focus you are interested in. For example, a basic course with a focus on wine takes 4 days, an advanced course 11 days and a beer sommelier course 7 days. You can allow 3.5 days for a Swiss water sommelier course and 7.5 days for a course focusing on spirits.

In the beer sommelier course, participants gain knowledge about beer culture, beer production and the basics of sensory analysis. The diversity of Swiss beer is also a topic that fills the day, as is the international diversity of beer. The service and sale of beer in restaurants, beer marketing, food pairing with beer and beer and society are further key topics. You can request detailed information on the content of the individual key topics directly via the contact form.

In an advanced sommelier course (second part), participants can deepen their knowledge from part one and build up sound expert knowledge. They have the competence to develop a customized wine offer for a restaurant, to sell it successfully in the restaurant and know how to combine food and wine. They will also be able to form an opinion at higher-level tastings and present and justify this opinion.
