Language study trip to England: Immerse yourself in British English

A language study trip to England is a very efficient way of learning English, because you also use English outside the classroom - in conversation with the landlady (hostess of private accommodation) at the dining table, when you want to know what to eat with Yorkshire pudding or whether her WLAN is working, with the other course participants from all over the world, when ordering drinks in the pub, etc. In this way, you will immediately experience how every little learning progress is worthwhile, you will be motivated and learn more easily, develop your feeling for the language and reduce language barriers.

In addition to the well-known university cities such as Cambridge and Oxford, it is primarily the capital London that attracts language learners from all over the world. However, there are also English language schools in many other places in England, for example in the seaside resort of Brighton on the south coast, in the industrial city of Manchester in the north-west or in the English Channel on the island of Jersey.

English language courses are available for all ages, levels and interests, from one-week vacation courses for children to courses lasting several months for adults to prepare for an internationally recognized English diploma (Cambridge, TOEFL, IELTS) and from language trips for senior citizens to industry-specific intensive business English courses.

During your language study trip, you will live with a host family arranged by the school or in a hall of residence. Of course, other forms of accommodation are also possible. The language travel providers listed on our website will be happy to help you with your choice of accommodation and all other questions and issues. The providers have often known their partner schools around the world for a long time, regularly check the conditions and offers on site and are therefore a good point of contact for anyone interested in a language study trip.

A language study trip to London, Cambridge, Torquay, York, Exeter, Scarborough or one of the other cities in England is the perfect choice for all England enthusiasts who want to make new contacts and improve their British English skills.

Questions and answers

More and more language schools are offering language courses that focus on specific target groups, such as teenagers, professionals, young adults, 30+ or 50+. The offers for a language study trip to England for 50+ are aimed at people over the age of 50 and offer courses, accommodation and leisure activities tailored to this age group. This usually means that you will not be accommodated in a student residence, but will instead choose either a host family where people of your age are your "host parents", a single apartment (such as a vacation apartment), a school residence or a hotel. The leisure program during a language trip is also tailored to the appropriate age group, so that you have more cultural and historical activities on your program than, for example, on trips for 25-year-olds. These can be theater performances or excursions to certain sights, whisky tastings, cooking classes, golf lessons, dance classes or museum tours. You can decide at any time whether you want to take part in the organized leisure activities or prefer to explore the surrounding area on your own. The content of the language courses is also usually somewhat different from that of other target groups, so you can be sure that you will gain knowledge that is relevant to you and not things like: "Do you have a steady girlfriend? Are you coming to the disco tonight? Or what kind of job do you want to do when you grow up?) So you can only benefit from a language course for 50+ on a language study trip to England if you are willing to spend your free time with your peers.
You cannot assume that you or your child will be understood during a language study trip to England if you speak German or even Swiss German. If you are lucky, there will be staff at the language school or accommodation who speak German, but this is not the norm. And it doesn't have to be, nor should it be. After all, you want to learn English and the best way to do that is to be forced to speak the language on a daily basis, outside of the actual English courses. But don't worry, even as a language beginner you can make yourself understood in an emergency, even if it's with your hands and feet. If you are not confident enough to speak only English, you can also opt for a language school where the proportion of German-speaking students is higher, so that you have someone to talk to in your free time. However, you should be aware that the learning effect will be significantly lower.
Most language schools in England offer you the opportunity to enrol on diploma preparation courses in addition to standard and intensive courses. These courses prepare you for the most common language examinations, usually the Cambridge examinations. Depending on your existing language level, you can choose between the Preliminary English Test (PET), the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE), the Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or the Certificate of Advanced in English (CPE). You can also prepare for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Business English qualifications such as the Business English Certificate (BEC), the Business Language Testing System (BULATS), the Cambridge International Certificate in Financial English (ICFE) or the Cambridge International Legal English Certificate (ILEC). However, you should be aware that not every language school offers preparation courses for all of these language examinations during your language study trip to England. In most cases, it is mainly the FCE and the CAE for which you will be prepared. If you are interested in one of the other language certificates, it makes sense to contact the providers of language travel programs in England directly and ask for detailed information. +
During your language study trip to England, you can of course decide for yourself how intensively you would like to learn English and choose one of the courses on offer. Standard courses are usually offered, which comprise around 20 lessons per week. In addition, intensive courses are almost always offered, which comprise around 30 lessons. Semi-intensive courses are 25 to 27 lessons per week, but are not offered by all language schools in England. The information on the number of lessons is not binding, as each language school determines the content, structure, duration and intensity itself. You should therefore always compare the individual schools that are suitable for you in order to find the right offer. Also pay attention to how long a lesson lasts at the individual English schools, as this can vary greatly between 45 and 90 minutes.
You can usually also attend exam preparation courses, which prepare you primarily for the Cambridge exams (FCE, CAE and CPE), as well as business courses and private lessons. Combination courses are also often possible during a language study trip to England, consisting of group courses and individual lessons, for example, as well as special courses that include a specific leisure program, such as golfing or cooking.
To ensure that you find the right school for your language study trip to England, it is of course important that you take your time in your search and make a careful comparison. Which school offers the type of course you are looking for? What is your first impression of the school? What things are already bothering you? What criteria must a language school absolutely fulfill for you or your child? You should also take these points into account in your search:
  • Experience and reputation of the language school
  • Experience and skills of the teaching staff
  • Native speaker teachers
  • Exact location of the school
  • School infrastructure
  • Types of accommodation
  • Distance from the accommodation to the school
  • Accessibility and transport connections
  • Distances to places of interest
  • Course types
  • Levels
  • Minimum age
  • Maximum class size
  • Lessons - duration and number
  • Organized leisure activities at the language school
  • Costs and inclusive services
  • Transfer from and to the airport
  • Examinations, examination costs, examination dates
