Language courses in France are worthwhile!

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner, language travel in France is definitely worthwhile for anyone who wants to learn French, brush up on what they have already learned or improve their language skills. Have you also had enough of the dreary classrooms of Swiss language schools and would like to learn French in a small town by the sea in the south of France or in romantic Paris, for example? Would you like to get to know French culture alongside the dry grammar and never-ending vocabulary and put your newly acquired French skills into practice in a café, on the beach or in a boutique? Would you like to devote yourself entirely to learning French, make new contacts from home and abroad and turn your back on all other obligations for a while?

Then it's worth taking a look at the current offers for language courses in France. Experienced teachers at the various language schools throughout France offer very instructive and interesting learning material, which can be learned in intensive courses or in half-day or hourly courses.

Anyone who invests so much time, energy and not least money in a language study trip and a suitable French course also wants this investment to pay off. You want a well-equipped school in a central location, nice teachers, a nice room and good-humored fellow students. You cannot influence each of these points now, but you can influence the most important ones. When looking for the right provider for your language travel in France, start right at the beginning with the cities you want to travel to. Once you have found these, focus on the courses on offer at the various locations. Which French course would you like? Where will you be offered this course? In which city can you take a diploma course? Once you have a few schools to choose from, it's now time to get down to the finer details of your search. There are a few points to consider that will help you find the school that suits you best among the many providers. You can find out more in our comprehensive guides.

Interesting and worthwhile offers for your language courses in France can be found, for example, on the internet portal Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch. Numerous schools present their French language courses in France there. Compare and book!

Questions and answers

You shouldn't worry that you might be too old for language courses in France. Because learning a new foreign language has nothing to do with age and attending a language course in France is by no means tied to a maximum age. On the contrary. More and more language schools in France are offering course models specially developed for older language learners, often under the designation 50+. These French courses are thematically adapted to the relevant target group and also offer interesting leisure activities outside of the course. The accommodation, whether in a "host family" or in an apartment, also meets the higher standards of this age group, so that everything is thought of for such a language stay. Special offers for 30+ or business people also enable people over the age of young adulthood to take part in language courses abroad and participate in a language course with people in their age group or field of interest. It is best to talk to language travel providers in France about your ideas and wishes in order to find the offer that is best suited to you.
When traveling to France, you should be aware that the language lessons will be held exclusively in French. It is therefore advisable to brush up on your French before you travel and to revise important phrases and basic words. The French course is taught by a native speaker who has the necessary qualifications to teach French as a foreign language. To ensure that the lessons do not become boring, all teachers endeavor to make them varied and thematically adapted to the target group. To this end, listening comprehension exercises are carried out, also using audio files, and pronunciation is practiced. You will learn grammar rules and applications appropriate to your level, practise reading and writing as well as conversing with the teacher and other language students. You will receive all the necessary materials, such as textbooks and study sheets, directly from the language teachers, so you don't have to worry about this before your language study trip to France. The cost of course materials is not included in the price at all language schools, but this should be stated in the cost breakdown and paid for on site. Otherwise, please enquire about this before booking. It is also advisable to take a writing pad and pens with you, possibly also blank index cards, as these are rarely provided by the language schools in France and are often needed for homework, which you will receive after almost every lesson.
Before you decide on a language school, you should consider how important the size of the school is to you for language travel to France. The school sizes are often labeled with the corresponding initial letters: S for Small, M for Medium and L for Large. Small schools usually have a total number of students of up to 60, which promises personal interaction between the language students and with the teachers. Another advantage is certainly that you are taught in small classes, but the disadvantage is that French courses cannot always be offered at every level. You are also less likely to find special courses in smaller schools, unless they specialize in them. The leisure programme, which is organized by the school on a daily or weekly basis, is more limited in scope than in large schools, which often offer very attractive and varied activities. Medium-sized language schools have up to 200 students, so that personal contact between students and teachers can still be maintained. French courses are usually offered at all levels and there is a good infrastructure. If you like a lively and diverse environment, it's best to choose large language schools with more than 200 students for your language travel to France. Here you will find all kinds of language courses and a very good infrastructure, with space for self-study and social gatherings, which is also reflected in the number of organized leisure programs. Which type of school you ultimately choose depends mainly on where you want to go, which course you want to attend and which size of school you personally prefer.
You can usually prepare for various French language diplomas in language schools in France in so-called diploma courses or exam courses. You can take the language exams at authorized examination centers and either register before you start your language course or do so during the course. The language school often takes care of the organization, travel and departure, so that you can concentrate exclusively on learning. However, as many exams are only scheduled twice a year and you can register for them at least two months before the date, you should find out about the relevant language exams well in advance. The schools for language travel to France, where you can usually attend a preparation course for some of these internationally recognized exams, will be happy to provide you with information:
  • DELF (Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française) level A1, A2, B1, B2
  • DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) level C1, C2
  • CEFP 1 (Certificat d'Etudes de Français Pratique 1) level A2
  • CEFP 2 (Certificat d'Etudes de Français Pratique 2) level B1
  • DL (Diplôme de Langue) level B2
  • DSLCF (Diplôme Supérieur Langue et Culture Françaises) level C1
  • Diplomas from the CCIP (Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris) DFA1, DFA 2, DAFA, CFP, CFTH, CFJ, CFS, CFST
  • TELC français A1, A2, B1, B2
As with all language travel to France or another French-speaking country, find out about the individual providers and language courses early on and in detail. Obtain information directly from the respective language schools and compare the documents very carefully. You should therefore clarify the following points:
  • Experience of the school
  • Training and continuing education, further training of teachers
  • Teaching content and methods
  • Placement test
  • Class size
  • Certificates and diplomas
  • Location of the school
  • Accommodation and meals
  • Accessibility and public transport connections
  • Duration of lessons
  • Mix of nationalities among the participants
  • Leisure activities
  • Costs
  • Teaching materials
  • Arrival and transfer
  • Travel cancellation insurance
