Language courses in England: Holidays with profit

Language travel to England offers you the chance to explore the country on vacation, get to know people and improve your English skills at the same time. With the right course of the right length, intensity and environment for you, you'll return home with more British English in your ears - and on your tongue.

English language courses are available for all age groups and all levels, from beginners to almost native speakers. The language schools carry out placement tests before the start of the course or clarify your previous language skills in a personal interview and then assign you to the appropriate level. If you want to get the most out of your language course, it is important that you are neither under-challenged nor over-challenged. Through appropriate challenges, you will make continuous progress, can directly test your extended language skills in everyday English, experience small successes every day and thus increase your motivation to learn and speak even more.

The range of English language schools in England is large and spread across the whole island. You will find numerous schools in London and the traditional university cities of Cambridge and Oxford, but also in many other cities such as Brighton, Liverpool, Newcastle, York, Manchester or on the Channel Island of Jersey. So you have a wide choice between vibrant capital cities and picturesque coastal towns.

The providers on our website will be happy to help you choose the right language to England for you.

Questions and answers

It is common for language trips to England to offer youth programs that cover the age range from 13 to 18. Such programs are strictly geared to the needs of teenagers in terms of the learning process and leisure activities and offer enough variety to relax after an intensive day of learning and take part in school activities with their peers.

In addition, it is of course important for this age group to be supervised by well-trained teachers outside of the English course, as all participants are still minors and require a guided and organized daily routine. Going to London alone without supervision or going out late at night is therefore not possible or permitted for this target group. However, this does not detract from the fun, as the motivation within the group guarantees an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

In addition to youth trips, there are of course also language trips to England for young adults. These are usually structured slightly differently and offer more freedom for independent learning and discovery. You don't necessarily have to live with a host family or directly on campus, but can also opt for accommodation in your own room in a shared flat or a vacation apartment. Leisure activities are not quite as tightly organized as on youth trips, but you always have the opportunity to meet up with other students and take part in events and activities organized by the school.

There is also a whole range of first-class language courses for adults in England. Business courses in particular are becoming increasingly popular, where you can learn business English that you can use in your professional life.

You can attend different types of language courses during a language study trip to England. Standard courses usually comprise around 20 lessons per week. If you want to learn more, intensive courses are ideal. These usually consist of around 30 lessons per week and therefore provide you with more knowledge in the same amount of time than is possible in a standard course.
You can also attend diploma courses that prepare you for various language examinations. Such language examinations are internationally recognized and are conducted and evaluated by official bodies. The preparation courses usually last 12 weeks, but they can also be completed in a shorter time if you have good aptitude. Business English courses are also becoming increasingly popular for language trips to England. In such a course, you usually have a standard part first and then a few lessons of English for business.
As many special terms are explained in such a language course and it is aimed at a very specific target group, knowledge of English is usually a prerequisite. However, the exact language level you need to have depends on the individual schools. You can also find out which types of courses are available in the guide "Education, further education, training in the field of language" (see navigation point "Education help" above).
Before you embark on a language study trip to England, it is important to take a little time for planning. It makes sense not to rush this decision, but to start looking for the right language course and the right language school a few months before the desired date. Bear in mind that, especially in the summer months, demand is extremely high in some cities in England, such as London and Cambridge, and if you decide at too short notice, you may not be able to get your preferred accommodation. You should therefore plan sufficient preparation time, also to be able to book cheap flights. It is best to first decide on a city in which you would like to complete your English language course and then select a language school according to the following criteria, among others:
  • Courses and levels
  • Maximum course size
  • Lesson duration (usually between 45 and 60 minutes)
  • Qualifications of the teaching staff
  • Location and infrastructure of the school
  • Size of the school
  • Mix of nationalities
  • Organized and offered leisure activities
  • Types of accommodation and catering
  • Distance accommodation - school
  • Possible packages and offers (travel cancellation insurance, international health insurance, ...)
  • Distance from school and accommodation to sights, beach, town, etc.
  • Costs for course, registration fees, school materials, transfers, etc.

Further information on choosing the right school for language travel to England can also be found in our free guide "How to choose the right education provider" (see navigation point "Education help" above).

In England itself, there are a whole range of attractive cities that are suitable for a language study trip. Depending on the age group, the priorities when choosing the right location for the language school will certainly vary, so you should always take your or your child's needs into account. For teenagers, a college on the outskirts of a large city or in a province outside of England can offer many advantages in terms of leisure activities, such as sailing, horse riding or playing football. After all, remember that it is not just learning that takes place, but that a large part of the day consists of applying and developing what you have learned in your free time with young people from all over the world.
For older people, the big city is certainly more interesting for language travel to England. The cultural offerings such as museums, exhibitions and events are always enriching and extremely wide-ranging, so that you not only expand your language skills, but also your cultural horizons. So think carefully about what you want from your English course and the location of the school. Here you will find a small selection of cities where language schools are represented:
  • London
  • Brighton
  • Cambridge
  • York
  • Jersey
  • Oxford
  • Manchester
  • Liverpool
  • Newcastle
  • Chester
  • Bristol
You can't learn languages overnight, but you can certainly improve your language skills significantly. That's why language courses in England are offered for as little as one week, so that even people with very little time can improve their English skills. If you really don't have more than one or two weeks to learn English, you are advised to opt for a course that will give you thorough training during this time. For language travel to England, you can opt for intensive courses, which comprise around 30 lessons a week, or business English courses of the same length. If you would like to learn a little more, many language schools in London, Cambridge, Oxford or another English city offer combination courses, which offer individual lessons in addition to intensive lessons, for example. Pure one-to-one tuition is also possible and enables you to acquire as much English as possible in a very short time. With one-to-one lessons, you can usually decide for yourself what you want to learn and what you attach particular importance to. English language courses for lawyers, doctors or secretaries can also be tailored to your professional group at many schools or in private lessons.

Another way to learn as much English as possible in a short space of time is to choose the "at the teacher's home" option. With this option, you live in the home of your language teacher and have intensive lessons throughout the day at precisely set times, which are always based on your personal rhythm. In addition to the lessons, you are in constant contact with the teacher and possibly their family and are therefore "forced" to speak English throughout the day.
