Animal physiotherapy - pain relief and mobility training for animals

Although it is not a recognized treatment method, animal physiotherapy has been very successful and is often used. The therapy is suitable for animals with diseases related to the bones, muscles, joints or spine. If an animal suffers from pain, this usually manifests itself in lameness. Physiotherapy can specifically counteract such illnesses and pain. As animals often adopt long-term, damaging protective postures following surgery or lameness, it is very important to use manual techniques to provide a targeted solution.

Animal physiotherapy was derived from human physiotherapy and transferred to the animal musculoskeletal system. In addition to manual methods, some other forms of therapy from human medicine have also been successfully transferred to veterinary medicine, such as ultrasound therapy or electrotherapy. Massages or passive gymnastic exercises are also carried out during physiotherapy sessions.

A degree in veterinary medicine, a doctor with additional training in manual medicine or a degree in human physiotherapy are considered mandatory for admission to the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) in animal physiotherapy with a federal diploma. Three years of professional experience and four independently prepared protocols of examination and treatment according to SVTPT guidelines (2 of the dog, 2 of the horse) are also required before the AFPE in animal physiotherapy.

Depending on the school or training institute, different requirements are placed on participants in animal physiotherapy training. Completed vocational training and a good physical condition are often basic requirements, as is safe handling of the animal or animals in question and an interest in veterinary and physiotherapy topics.
