Gain in-depth knowledge of vegetation mapping in the CAS Vegetation Analysis and Field Botany

Are you interested in vegetation mapping and would like to work intensively on this topic in the future? Are you considering further professional training as a specialist in nature conservation, environmental consulting, engineering biology, agriculture and forestry or landscape conservation? In this case, the certificate course in comparative analysis and field botany could provide you with practical and benefit-oriented knowledge of field botany and vegetation analysis with a special focus on difficult species groups or families such as grasses, sages and sedges, as well as plants in the non-flowering stage. This course prepares you for the final thesis for the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) and is worth 15 ECTS.

 

In addition to previous ecological and botanical knowledge of habitats and species, you should also have knowledge of success monitoring and sample planning. A university degree or comparable qualification is also a prerequisite for admission. The CAS course lasts around 18 months and is divided into three modules. These include the precise use of aerial photographs and GPS in vegetation mapping, monitoring projects and experimental planning. Project planning and the use of VEGEDAZ are also part of the training. Extensive knowledge of field botany and knowledge of the use of suitable plants for renaturation projects round off the training.

Questions and answers

The continuing education, further training in vegetation mapping CAS Vegetation Analysis and Field Botany costs CHF 7,000 for the 2017 course, including documents and fees. In addition, there are travel costs, costs for accommodation, meals and literature.

The CAS Vegetation Analysis and Field Botany certificate course is primarily aimed at university graduates. However, people from the fields of landscape and nature conservation, environmental consulting, agriculture and forestry, education and engineering biology as well as interested private individuals with sufficient qualifications can also take part in the continuing education, further training in the field of vegetation mapping, provided the course management agrees to admission.

Within ten presentation days, you will deal with vegetation analysis within this CAS, including vegetation mapping using GPS and lift images. A further ten attendance days are planned for field botany. After completing this course, you will be able to carry out vegetation mapping independently.

In lectures and practice-oriented exercises as well as in various excursions, the participants of the CAS Vegetation Analysis and Field Botany (UAS) are also introduced to the topic of vegetation mapping. The excursions during the intensive week take place in Valais, the others in selected Swiss regions.
