Become a sales manager: Take the lead for sales activities and key account management

Sales managers lead the sales departments of companies in all sectors and make a significant contribution to the success of companies that sell products or services. They are members of senior management and often bear overall responsibility for all sales activities - from planning and monitoring sales processes in the back office and field sales force to the sales and distribution organization. With the company's objectives in mind, they develop and implement suitable sales concepts and strategies and evaluate feedback from customer service for management decisions, for example on product range and pricing or innovations.

The Advanced Federal Diploma in Sales Management (HFP) has been in existence for over 30 years. It is correspondingly well established with employers. Sales managers hold the highest qualification in higher professional education and thus have a head start on their competitors. At the same time, the federal diploma opens the doors to upper management.

Since 2019, the HFP has been completed in one of two specializations: "Sales Management" or "Key Account Management" (KAM). For graduates specializing in sales management, the focus is on the planning, management and (sales) control of operational sales activities; for graduates specializing in KAM, the focus is on looking after key customers and shaping customer relationships.

The preparatory courses for the Sales Manager HFP impart knowledge in self-management, employee management, labor and contract law, accounting, market research, marketing, distribution, sales strategy, sales planning, sales controlling, project management and relationship management.

The sales manager training course with a federal diploma is suitable for managers with an interest in business management and a keen sense of market developments and consumer trends who wish to take on full responsibility in sales and perhaps also work in an international environment.

Questions and answers

A survey conducted by Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch revealed the following: 64.5 % of respondents requested detailed documents from a school regarding further training for sales managers because they had previously read a positive online review of the school. A further 21 % stated that the school had been recommended to them. The remaining 14.5 % enquired about schools that they already knew beforehand. Another reason is revealed by an optional statement of alternative reasons: "Stumbled across it by chance". Or "just like that". This shows how carefully online reviews are read and how much influence they have on the choice of school. The sales manager diploma course is aimed at people who are already working in sales and want to take on management and planning tasks. There are a large number of schools in Switzerland that offer these preparatory courses for the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE), so you are not restricted to one course location.
Nevertheless, all schools require you to have several years of practical experience in sales or marketing before you are admitted to the course. As a rule, you must have at least three years of experience in a management position so that you have the necessary prerequisites and skills to manage the sales division of a company as a sales manager.

Sales managers lead the sales department of a company and are responsible for sales figures. Traditionally, this includes employees in internal sales, key account management and field sales. If these managers have completed and passed an Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE), they bear the title of federally certified sales manager. Thanks to their specialist and management knowledge, they are responsible for planning the sales organization and implementing sales concepts in line with the company's objectives and strategies. In other words, they manage all sales and distribution activities with the aim of increasing sales of the company's products. By maintaining and managing customer relationships - also in terms of customer loyalty - federally certified sales managers make a significant contribution to the company's success. Sales managers are also responsible for optimizing processes, carrying out sales checks to determine sales success, clarifying sales-related legal issues and positioning products on the market. Sales managers are employed at middle management level.

Anyone who has obtained a Swiss educational qualification from the Swiss Marketing Confederation (SMC) as a sales manager since February 2021 will receive a European certificate. Earlier professional qualifications can also be retroactively certified according to the European standard at least 10 years in the past. This is because SMC is an official certification partner of EMC (European Marketing Confederation). As a sales director, the sales manager qualification with a federal diploma is internationally comparable, understandable and recognized. The Sales Director corresponds to an additional diploma as a Bachelor's degree with international recognition.

A federally certified sales manager specializing in key account management has the following tasks:

  • Further development of own market performance and the company through the findings from customer support
  • Support sales strategy and ensure that sales targets are achieved
  • Create sales planning for the KAM area
  • Informs the marketing or management about the success of the implemented sales activities

  • Decides on the distribution of the sales budget in the KAM area
  • Develop, maintain and optimize all elements of market cultivation in the KAM area

Several years of practical experience in sales or marketing are required for admission to the sales manager training course. You must have at least three years' experience in a managerial and/or property management role in sales. A one to one and a half year continuing education, further training can prepare you for a job as a sales manager. The sales manager training provides the necessary management and planning skills for this management position in sales. The training is federally regulated and the examination subjects and teaching structure are the same at all schools. The course content, however, may vary slightly depending on the training provider. In addition to the mandatory requirements, students on a sales manager training course gain knowledge that goes beyond the examination content in order to be able to competently meet the demands of the job later on.

According to a survey conducted by the education platform Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch, interest in further training for sales managers is mainly due to a comparison of needs. 79% of those surveyed would like to check whether the course meets their needs. 14% are interested in the further training course that prepares them for a higher specialist examination in sales management because of a recommendation. 7 % of respondents were interested in the course because this qualification is often required in job advertisements. One of the participants showed us with the free text answer "employee" that interest in the course can also result from everyday challenges. Other free text responses include:

Detailhandelsspezialistin --> 2017, Verkaufsleiter --> bin ich noch dran. Ich habe mich bei der zweiten Weiterbildung bewusst für die SIU entschieden, da ich mit den allgemeinen Konzept und den Dozenten der SIU sehr zufrieden bin und auch war. Der Verkaufsleiter wird leider nur in Olten oder Zürich angeboten. Zürich ist leider mit dem Auto nicht immer so einfach, der viele Verkehr und die Parkplatz Suche. Hier finde ich es super, das die Parkkarten bei euch bezogen werden können.

Die Erwartung an SIU war, dass Sie mir die Möglichkeit gaben alles zu erlernen, dies war sicher gegeben, Dozenten waren sehr Hilfsbereit. - Was mich aber am meisten gestört hat ist, dass bei wichtigen Sachen wie Prüfungssimulation keine Unterlagen da waren (Beilagen zum fall), obwohl man wusste dass dieses Datum schon lange fixiert war. - Wir haben ja Controlling erlernt was hier aber 2 mal nicht gemacht wurde von der Schule. Auch bei den kleinen Simulationen waren unterlagen nicht aufbereitet oder man musste umstellen. Man wurde auch zum Teil spät informiert bei Änderungen. - Der Kurs ''Open Book'' war für mich nicht zu gebrauchen, ich erhoffte mir eigentlich von der Schule kleine Tips und Tricks wie stelle ich einen zusammen und wie kann ich ihn einsetzten an der Prüfung,, man hatte sicher Erfahrungen aus den Vorgänger Klasse dies hätte sicher weitergegeben werden können. Für mich was das Preisleistungsverhältnisse nicht gegeben, war auf Empfehlung bei Euch.

Die Schulleitung hört aus meiner Sicht zu wenig zu und ist auch zu wenig im Austausch mit den Teilnehmenden. Bei den schriftlichen Prüfungssimulationen fehlten bei beiden Prüfungen die Beilagen. Das Sekretariat musste die Beilagen zuerst organisieren, nach 20 Minuten konnte ein Teilnehmer die Unterlagen liefern, nicht das Sekretariat.

Sehr solide. Die Handlungsfelder sollten durchmischt sein, da man vernetzte Denken verlangt, sollte es auch nicht sein, dass man das Handlungsfeld abschliesst und dann über 3/4 Jahr nicht mehr repetiert. Coronabedingt musste von Präsenz- zu Onlineunterricht umgestellt werden. Den Stundenplan hätte man für den Onlineunterricht anpassen aollen.

Vielen Dank für diesen spannenden Hinweis, den wir gerne aufnehmen. Es ist nicht immer ganz einfach. Die einen möchten die Unterlagen in Printform, die anderen digital. Alle abgegebenen Bücher könnten wir auch als E-Book abgeben. Das ist aber interessanterweise bei Studi im Bereich Sales und Marketing aufgrund von Umfragen nicht wirklich beliebt. Bei den HR-Lehrgängen hingegen schon ... Alle MMI-eigenen Unterlagen sind - das wissen die Studis - auf Wunsch auch digital erhältlich. Wir werden diesen Punkt in Zukunft deutlich offener kommunizieren.

Danke für den Hinweis. Die zentrale Ablage haben wir schon mehrmals in einer Cloud initialisiert. Zu Beginn eines Lehrgangs wurde diese bisher sehr rege benutzt - fast zu 100%. Aber mit zunehmender Dauer sank das Interesse und die Benutzung jeweils rapide.

Die Organisation war gut. Für mich wäre jedoch die Anordung der Stunden oder der verschiedenen Fächer anders besser gelöst. Ich würde an Eurer Stelle küntig im Sommer für jedes Fach einen Repetionsabend machen vor den Ferien. Mafo und DM (Social Media) war sehr früh abgeschlossen und gerade in diesen Fächern wäre es sicherlich gut gewesen, dass wir nochmals einen Repetionsaben gehabt hätten. Die internen Prüfunen waren ebenfalls ehr gut. Es hat uns gezeigt, wo wir stehen.

Der Lehrgang war sehr gut organisiert. Die Stimmung während des Unterrichts war angenehm und oft spannend und prüfungsgezielt. Je nach Fach, waren aber die Dozenten eher genügend was die Übermittlung vom Schulstoff angeht.
