Yoga therapist: a profession with a future

Do you want to help and support people in your profession? Are you looking for a new professional challenge? Do you love yoga? Then you've come to the right place! Have you ever thought about training as a yoga therapist?

In the areas of meditation, health and fitness, yoga plays its part in helping clients to feel better, more agile and balanced, with more strength and energy and a flexible body and mind. This is also the job of a yoga therapist. It is to care for the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of the therapy participants and to create harmony for them. Depending on the orientation of yoga, a therapist teaches different techniques and exercises to unite people with the universe. This can mean that she focuses on very movement-intensive yoga, extremely meditative yoga or all forms in between.

In order for a yoga teacher or therapist to be able to teach students professionally, it is important that they have comprehensive knowledge and expertise. The easiest way to acquire this knowledge and know-how is through yoga training, which can be completed at a wide variety of providers and yoga schools. You can find out which courses and training programs are suitable for you to become a successful yoga therapist from the respective providers, which you can easily contact using the form.

As part of complementary therapy, it has recently become possible to take the higher professional examination as a complementary therapist specializing in yoga therapy. On the way to the HFP, prospective therapists in complementary medicine obtain the industry certificate of the OdA KT by presenting a course in medical basics and the Tronc Commun in addition to sound yoga training. The higher professional examination can be taken if extensive practical experience and 36 hours of supervision can also be demonstrated.

In contrast to yoga therapy in the field of complementary therapy, after a short instructor course in yoga you can call yourself a yoga teacher and offer courses.

A yoga lesson - e.g. in a fitness center - is designed to help participants learn yoga practices, become more flexible and balanced, while yoga therapy aims to alleviate symptoms and improve the health and well-being of clients.
 

The term "yoga therapist" is not protected in Switzerland. However, it is possible to obtain the recognized title "Complementary therapist with federal diploma (HFP)" with a focus on yoga therapy.

The following requirements must be met for admission to the Advanced Professional Examination:

  • Vocational qualification or equivalent qualification at upper secondary level
  • Method training in yoga
  • Industry certificate from the OdA KT
  • Medical basics course
  • Course Tronc Commun
  • 36 hours of supervision
  • Professional experience in yoga therapy

Yoga therapy is not primarily about movement, relaxation and fitness, but about helping patients with chronic psychological or physical complaints, for example, to alleviate symptoms and increase their well-being and resilience.

Within these individual sub-disciplines of art therapy, there is a whole range of interesting training and further education opportunities in Switzerland, both in the form of short seminars lasting several days, intensive basic or advanced courses or full courses leading to the higher professional examination. People who are not sure whether training to become an art therapist is really the right decision can, for example, first attend an introductory course or a basic course to get an idea of whether this professional field actually corresponds to their own interests and inclinations. People who are already sure that they would like to pursue a career in the educational or social field, or would like to expand their current work in these areas, have the opportunity to train in basic training, for example as a painting therapist, in body-oriented music or in movement therapy. Such training courses are basic training courses that last around two to three years and provide participants with the knowledge they need to work as an art therapist in an institution or in their own painting studio. It is then possible to continue training in this specialist area and obtain recognition from one of the professional associations (GPK, FIAC, SVAKT, VDT, ARAET, APSAT, BTK), which enables them to be recognized by health insurance companies. This can be a corresponding further training course with professional experience, or a higher professional examination with a corresponding specialization - such as art therapy.
