Architect UAS: What are the disadvantages of studying?
After completing your studies, you will be able to plan and build residential and commercial buildings, housing estates, industrial buildings or public and cultural buildings such as schools, stadiums, churches and other buildings. Architects UAS design new things - by accompanying construction projects from the idea to completion - and maintain or convert existing buildings.
The main disadvantages of an "Architect UAS degree" are:
- The duration of study of approximately three years full-time or four years part-time requires a high level of time commitment and a high degree of self-discipline and motivation. In the longer option, students work part-time alongside their studies, which can lead to a double burden.
- Despite cantonal contributions, a budget of around CHF 3,000 to CHF 8,500 must be expected for the entire Architect UAS course, depending on the school. Added to this are the costs for materials and teaching aids.
- The course imparts architectural and design knowledge. It also includes technical, ecological, economic, cultural and social knowledge. This versatility can be a challenge for some students.
- As the job title "architect" is not protected in Switzerland, in principle anyone can use it. However, the diploma in architecture UAS is federally recognized and is highly regarded in the private sector.
- Working hours can be irregular, as many construction projects are under great time pressure. The labor market is also dependent on the construction industry.
Architects UAS work in architectural firms, either as self-employed, employees or as owners. There are also jobs in public administration, with general contractors, housing cooperatives or in the construction departments of large companies. There they work in areas such as urban and spatial planning, real estate management or project management.
