Becoming a forensic scientist, materials scientist, lawyer or launching a biomedical start-up. The first step in many demanding and highly interesting careers is to enter a grammar school (Gymnasium, Kantonsschule or Kollegium). Sometimes a grammar school entrance examination is required.
At the Gymnasium, students deepen their general knowledge and are guided towards a university entrance qualification. With the nationally recognized qualification, the gymnasiale Matura, they are admitted directly to university, ETH or teacher training colleges. In combination with subject-specific, mostly practice-oriented additional qualifications, they can also study at universities of applied sciences.
Long-term grammar school - short-term grammar school
Depending on the canton, entry to the Gymnasium takes place either from elementary school (long-term Gymnasium) or from secondary school (short-term Gymnasium) - i.e. after the 6th or 8th/9th school year.
Admission: Varies from canton to canton
Admission to grammar schools (long and short-term grammar schools) is regulated at cantonal level. In some cantons, transfer takes place on the recommendation of the class teacher or from a certain average grade. Other cantons use transition procedures with tests and interviews or written and oral grammar school entrance examinations.
