Questions and answers

For all those who would like to gain a brief insight into Ayurveda therapy and get to know the basics of this life science, even short seminars lasting one or two days can be very interesting. For all those who would like to expand their professional field with training in Ayurveda and gain in-depth knowledge, some schools offer courses that focus on one of the Ayurveda areas. These continuing education, further training courses vary in length. Very extensive training courses have a much longer duration. Ayurveda is one of the methods of complementary therapy, which means that a degree as a complementary therapist with a federal diploma in Ayurveda can be sought. In addition to 500 contact hours and 1250 learning hours as well as additional qualifications in basic medical education and the Tronc Commun, internships are also part of the training, which lasts a total of 2 - 3 years.

Many health insurance companies cover the costs of Ayurveda therapy with trained therapists as part of supplementary insurance. These currently include the methods of the EMR, the Experiential Medical Register:
  • Ayurveda (method number: 22)
  • Ayurveda nutritional advice (method numbers: 23 and 24)
  • Ayurvedic remedies (method numbers: 25 and 26)
  • Ayurveda massage (method numbers: 27 and 28)
As well as the methods of the ASCA, the Swiss Foundation for Complementary Medicine:
  • Ayurvedic massage (method number: 546)
  • Bioenergy (AVM) (method number: 299)
  • Nutritional counseling (AVM) (method number: 541)
  • Hatha Yoga (method number: 258)
  • Naturopathy (AVM) (method number: 545)
  • Phytotherapy (AVM) (method number: 414)
There are a number of very different courses and degree programs in the field of Ayurveda therapy, which often focus on different areas within this field and therefore also appeal to different groups of people. For the Master's degree course in Ayurvedic medicine, it is mainly medical practitioners who are admitted, but other people who have a sound basic medical education and professional experience are also admitted after a detailed interview. This group of people includes, for example, physiotherapists, nurses and pharmacists. The target group of people for whom a course in Ayurveda complementary therapy is suitable is somewhat broader and does not necessarily require in-depth medical knowledge. Such comprehensive training in Ayurveda therapy is aimed at people who wish to study Ayurveda in depth (more than 500 teaching hours) and have a school-leaving certificate or have already completed an apprenticeship in the educational, medical or social field, have professional experience even after the apprenticeship and are over 22 years old. The course is therefore suitable for complementary therapists who wish to expand their range of services, for physiotherapists or nurses or for people who wish to expand their Ayurveda training, for example in Ayurveda massage (AMA). The target group for the Ayurveda Cosmetics and Beauty Care course is less medical and more focused on wellness trainers, beauticians, wellness therapists and massage practitioners. It is best to ask the individual schools to send you the relevant training documents directly, which will explicitly show you the admission requirements and the desired target group.
Most schools in Switzerland primarily offer training in Ayurveda therapy that focuses on the area of massages and teaches the various techniques of partial body massage or full body massage. In addition to imparting knowledge and skills relating to Ayurvedic massages, however, some providers also offer special courses and training programs that focus on the other specialist areas of Ayurveda, nutritional therapy, yoga and Vedic psychology, as well as Ayurvedic medicine. Such further training courses can extend over two days or as a more comprehensive seminar comprising 180 teaching hours, for example to become an Ayurveda nutrition and health consultant. In addition to these individual courses, there are also courses and university courses on offer in Switzerland that cover the entire range of Ayurveda and provide part-time training, for example to become a Master in Ayurveda medicine or an Ayurveda specialist, which covers all areas of Ayurveda therapy, such as herbal therapies, dietetics, massages and psychological counseling.
