Barman / Barmaid: A job for night people

Barman / Barmaid - the outdated term for today's bartender. In this profession, resilience is paramount, as you should be able to keep a cool head even in difficult and hectic situations.

You advise guests on their choice of drinks and therefore know all the wines, beers, long drinks and spirits on offer. These are often quite a few, so it is important that you have a good memory. As a bartender, you often work in a noisy and over-stimulated environment. This means that you should remain calm even if several people want to order at the same time and that you have the ability to prioritize.

As a barman/barmaid, you will be responsible for restocking the refrigerated shelves with new bottles etc. at the end of the working day and often also for settling the accounts. In some establishments, it is appreciated if the bar staff speak foreign languages so that tourists can also be offered courteous service.

If you are interested or would like to find out more detailed information about the occupational field, you can contact schools directly and order information material at Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch.

Questions and answers

The answer depends on what you mean by "proper training". If you mean an apprenticeship in which you learn everything you need to know from scratch to be able to work as a barman/barmaid in the future, then yes. However, if you are thinking of a proper apprenticeship with a federal qualification, such as a Federal Certificate of Vocational Education and Training (Vocational Certificate) or Federal VET Diploma, then the answer is "no". As there is currently no federally regulated continuing education, further training to become a bartender, training and further education can be carried out in different courses.
As training to become a barman/barmaid is not a conventional apprenticeship with a federally recognized qualification, but rather training courses at private bar schools or bar schools, the content, duration, examinations, costs, course dates and course times vary. In addition to the daytime courses offered, continuing education, further training usually also takes place in the evenings or at weekends, so that it is also possible for working people from other industries to attend a bartender course and be trained in mixing drinks, glassware and merchandise knowledge, advising guests and other interesting topics.
The content of a bartending course can be very different and varies from school to school. Nevertheless, you will often learn the following in a basic course in order to be equipped for the profession of barman or barmaid:
  • Bar terminology
  • Important work utensils
  • Cocktail categories
  • Preparation of cocktails
  • Distillation
  • Units of measurement
  • Product knowledge of various spirits and beverage categories
  • Hygiene regulations and hospitality legislation
Many bar courses also cover flair bartending, bar management and guest communication, so please ask the bar schools directly about the content of the individual continuing education, further training courses to become a barman/barmaid and then compare them.
As there is no universal definition for the profession of bartender, the tasks, duties and competencies can vary. Nevertheless, a bartender or barman/barmaid is usually not responsible for staff, but works alone or in a team at a bar. The person responsible for personnel is usually the chef de bar / bar manager, who usually has several years of professional experience as well as business and organizational knowledge, which they acquire in a bar management course, for example.
