What are the main disadvantages of fitness trainer training?

After completing the fitness trainer training course, you will be able to provide individual and competent support to customers in the gym. You will introduce customers to fitness training in an efficient and appealing way, put together fitness, health or performance-oriented training programs for them and provide them with successful long-term support.

The most important disadvantages of fitness trainer training are:

  1. The qualification is not federal, but a school diploma or certificate - in some cases also an association diploma from the SAFS Swiss Academy of Fitness and Sports or an industry certificate as a trainer in exercise and health promotion. The Federal Professional Examination "Specialist in Exercise and Health Promotion" would be required for a federal certificate. A federally recognized diploma would require three to four years of study at a university of applied sciences with a Baccalaureate or Federal Vocational Baccalaureate.
  2. The course content and admission requirements for fitness trainer training at certificate level are generally not regulated and can be determined individually by the schools. As a rule, basic training and a minimum age of 18 years are required. Most providers of continuing education, further training to become a "fitness and movement trainer" are based on the modular system of the industry certificate and include the five basic modules (GM). This regulation also applies to the "Fitness Trainer with SAFS Specialist Certificate" diploma. Fitness and health training instructors with an industry certificate are declared at level 3 in the classification grid for EBQ professional qualifications in exercise and health promotion. They therefore meet the personnel qualification for recognition by health insurance companies.
  3. The training costs are relatively high at around CHF 1,000 to 8,500 and are not subsidized by the federal government (as this is not a federal qualification).
  4. The fitness trainer training course is usually completed alongside work and usually takes one to two years for a diploma course. During this time, good time management between work, study and leisure is required.

With the industry certificate as an exercise and health promotion trainer, you work in a fitness center. The job involves taking out a membership, assessing the current status, agreeing personal goals, drawing up a training program, providing instruction and support, periodic checks and extending membership. The focus is on holistic advice on exercise, relaxation and nutrition.
