What are the biggest disadvantages of janitor training?
After training as a janitor, you will be able to maintain residential and commercial properties as well as public buildings. This includes cleaning, simple repairs, maintenance of building services, environmental work, managing staff and contact with building users.
The main disadvantages of janitor training are:
- As janitor training usually takes place over two years alongside work, the time budget must be well managed.
- In addition to three years of vocational education and training (VET) and two years of specialist professional experience, further certificates and qualifications are required at the time of the examination: European Computer Driving License Base (ECDL), course certificate as a vocational trainer, specialist permit for the use of pesticides in special areas, emergency aid certificate and BLS-AED-SRC Complete (life-saving resuscitation measures) certificate. These certificates also cost time and money.
- If you want to carry out caretaking tasks independently, you must be willing to take on more responsibility. A high level of quality awareness, the ability to work independently and a willingness to work irregular hours are also required. On-call duty at night and at weekends is possible.
- The pressure of the annual federal final exams after the janitor training is high, but you are well prepared for them during the training. There are also mock tests and learning checks.
Graduates are employed in the private sector, by the municipality or the canton. Janitors have good opportunities on the job market. It is also possible to offer caretaking services and become self-employed (regular building maintenance or vacation and sickness cover).
