Import specialist with a federal certificate is now called foreign trade specialist with a federal certificate

Global trade is a great attraction and opportunity for people.

Today's global changes brought about by technology have accelerated many things. As a foreign trade specialist, you are therefore under a great deal of pressure and the course of the economy has a particular influence on everyday working life. A company determines the respective activity with its orientation and its products. The import specialist (new designation: foreign trade specialist) has an excellent knowledge of Swiss import promotion and export activities and is always aware of the great importance of the global economic situation. An import specialist is familiar with the field of marketing and knows how to successfully conduct import business. However, there are many things that need to be clarified before these are processed, such as import restrictions on the goods, customs regulations and various other trade restrictions.

The import specialist is interested in a cost-effective and trouble-free introduction of the imported goods. He/she is therefore in close contact with the forwarding and transport companies, which ensure that the imported goods arrive intact and on schedule at their destination. He/she is in close contact with insurance companies and banks in order to deal with questions relating to foreign exchange and payments.

Import specialists or foreign trade specialists manage entire country groups in large companies, while in small or medium-sized companies they tend to be all-rounders, where their work intersects with other professions such as purchasing or forwarding. Negotiating skills and fluency in several languages are a great advantage.

Questions and answers

Continuing education, further training to become an import specialist or foreign trade specialist, as it is known today, varies in duration depending on the school and training model, and lasts between one and one and a half years.

Foreign trade specialists with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education (formerly import specialists) are responsible for analyzing customer requirements and ensuring that goods and services are imported and exported professionally and on time, as well as for negotiating with customers and suppliers in different languages and obtaining advantageous conditions. Foreign trade specialists are involved in the planning and organization of shipments worldwide on a wide variety of transport routes and have knowledge of the various trade barriers, rules of origin, country-specific, ecological and economic conditions as well as the special customs clearance procedures for which they prepare and initiate the necessary documents. They are also responsible for preparing quotations and checking profitability after the order has been processed, as well as for team development and training.

Continuing education, further training as an import specialist no longer exists in this form. Since 2012, it has been known as the foreign trade specialist with a federal certificate.

For admission to continuing education, further training as a Foreign Trade Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education (formerly Import Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education), applicants must either have an EFU, a commercial secondary school diploma, a high school diploma or a comparable certificate and at least two years of professional experience in foreign trade.

The Federal Professional Examination (FPE) for Import Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education (now Foreign Trade Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education) consists of five parts, which are examined in writing or orally. The "Import and Export" and "Business Administration" sections as well as a case study are examined in writing, while the oral examination consists of an expert discussion on import and export as well as on business administration. Each part of the examination is scored once, with the exception of the case study, which is scored twice.
