Phytobenthos: For a sound education in the field of underwater flora

The assessment of watercourses, but also of small standing bodies of water such as ponds or lakeshores, is an extremely important task for the conservation of biodiversity. As many biocomponents such as macrophytes and phytobenthos are exposed to constantly changing indirect influences such as land use, morphology and hydrology, it is important to examine these criteria, as well as the runoff and the construction of banks and beds, for their ecological disturbance effects. Not all macrophytes, such as algae, diatoms, mosses or lichens, react negatively to environmental changes in the same way, as can be seen, for example, in rheophilic mosses, i.e. those mosses that are bound to flowing waters, which in most cases even benefit from engineering structures, in contrast to vascular macrophytes, which find more difficult living conditions.

In order to be able to comprehensively identify and analyze the biological status of water bodies, for example to develop suitable species protection programs, you will learn sound methods for species identification, water body assessment and bioindication in the CAS in Phytobenthos - Aquatic Plants and Algae certificate course. The Certificate of Advanced Studies is divided into three modules, bioindication, species knowledge and the CAS final thesis, and covers the FOEN module level concept, which includes diatoms, macrophytes, chemistry, hydrology, ecomorphology and external aspects, as well as the IBEM method, the ecology and systematics of diatoms, algae and macrophytes, and an in-depth study of lichens and mosses.

The CAS in Phytobenthos is primarily aimed at people who are professionally involved in water protection, species protection, nature conservation, water monitoring and aquatic ecology, as well as interested private individuals. However, a prerequisite is an in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of water as well as a university degree or comparable training with sufficient professional experience. Ask the relevant universities to send you comprehensive training documents for your in-service training in the field of phytobenthos and find out all the important details, objectives and requirements for the certificate course quickly and without obligation.

Questions and answers

The certificate course "Phytobenthos - Aquatic Plants and Algae" consists of three modules, each worth four, five and six ECTS credits. Module 1, with seven attendance days and four ECTS credits, deals with bioindications. Participants receive an introduction to the examination and assessment methods for watercourses, learn about the IBEM method for assessing standing water bodies and the FOEN's modular step-by-step concept (chemistry, hydrology, external aspects, macrophytes, ecomorphology, diatoms), as well as diatom, algae and macrophyte ecology and systematics. In the second module "Species Knowledge" with 6 ECTS and 14 attendance days, algae, macroalgae, diatoms, macrophytes, lichens and mosses are identified in different bodies of water. The third module is the CAS final thesis, without attendance days.

The Certificate of Advanced Studies CAS in Phytobenthos - Aquatic Plants and Algae is not part of a Master of Advanced Studies MAS, but an independent continuing education course.

A CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) is a further education qualification from a Universities.

  • Duration: Usually 1 semester part-time
  • Title: "Certificate of Advanced Studies in (subject)"
  • Recognition: International comparability via ECTS points
  • ECTS points (European Credit Transfer System = international credit points)

The CAS Phytobenthos lasts 18 months with 21 face-to-face courses, which generally take place on Fridays and Saturdays. In this way, it is perfectly possible to continue working in consultation with your supervisor.

The CAS in Phytobenthos is aimed at people with a university degree who would like to undertake further training. However, people without this level of education from the fields of aquatic ecology, species and nature conservation, water monitoring, education or water protection can also take part in the certificate course if they have the appropriate qualifications, as can interested private individuals.

The CAS Phytobenthos - Aquatic Plants and Algae certificate course comprises 21 attendance days, as well as the preparation of a final thesis and, of course, self-study. In total, the course lasts approximately 1.5 years.

To attend the CAS Phytobenthos, basic knowledge of the most important aquatic basics is mandatory.

More continuing education, further training courses are offered in the areas of biodiversity and species than the CAS in Phytobenthos - Aquatic Plants and Algae. For example, courses are offered on the topics of marcozoobenthos, vegetation analysis and field botany, mammals, nature in settlement areas and freshwater fish in Europe. For further topics, please contact the individual Universities of Applied Sciences and Universities directly.

CAS Phytobenthos - Aquatic plants and algae (FH)
The vegetation in the bottom zones of water bodies plays a central role in water protection. The species knowledge acquired in this CAS will enable you to carry out water body assessments and species protection programs. You will help to promote and maintain site-appropriate biotic communities in bodies of water.
