What tasks does a communications specialist (formerly marketing communications planner) have in practice?

A marketing communication planner works closely with the advertising or communication manager or consultant. They have a basic knowledge of marketing communication and are familiar with the interrelationships between the individual disciplines in an integrated communication concept. They are involved in the procurement of basic information and are responsible for planning through to delivery and monitoring. He also works on the organization of public relations, event and sponsorship projects and monitors adherence to schedules and budgets.

The Marketing Communications Planner course is primarily aimed at people whose goal is to pass the federal professional examination and receive comprehensive training in communications and advertising. Graduates of this in-depth specialist training have automatic access at a later date to the Head of Marketing Communications course with the internationally recognized IAA Diploma in Marketing Communications and preparation to become a federally certified communications manager. The following content is taught: Marketing, integrated communication, communication planning, production, media, advertising rights/advertising management, rhetoric and presentation techniques.

The course management decides on admission to the course. There is no entrance examination. Participants who have only been working in advertising or marketing for a short time are recommended to attend the introductory course in advertising or marketing. A certificate of a completed apprenticeship (commercial or graphic design) or equivalent training and 2 years of practical experience in advertising or marketing are required.

Questions and answers

The Federal Professional Examination (FPE) to become a Communication Planner with Federal Diploma of Higher Education (formerly Marketing Communication Planner FPE) consists of four parts, which are taken orally and/or in writing. You will be tested both orally and in writing in the first part of the examination, "Communication Planning / Integrated Communication", as well as in the second and third parts, "Production" and "Media" respectively. The fourth part of the examination, "Advertising law / Advertising industry", is exclusively a written examination lasting 30 minutes (240 minutes written examination for each of the other three parts and 25 minutes oral examination for each).

As a communication planner with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education (formerly a marketing communication planner with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education), you develop communication concepts, are responsible for planning and monitoring project content and project deadlines in technical, administrative and financial terms, and for monitoring campaigns. Communication planners obtain quotations, place orders and organize events and projects for sales promotion and advertising purposes. They are also responsible for auditing, budget and time control, as well as the preparation of minutes.

Depending on the school and the chosen course model (full-time or part-time), the Marketing Communication Planner preparatory course for the Federal Diploma of Higher Education in Communication Planning lasts three to four semesters, i.e. one and a half to two years.

Professional experience in marketing, advertising, direct marketing, retail or public relations of at least two years is a prerequisite for admission to the preparatory course Communication Planner with Federal Diploma of Higher Education (formerly Marketing Communication Planner with Federal Diploma of Higher Education). If you do not have practical professional experience in one of these areas, we recommend that you first attend another marketing communication course and complete the MarKom admission exam and then work as a marketing assistant or similar. With sufficient professional experience, you can register for the FPE after the two years have elapsed.

Continuing education, further training to become a marketing communications planner with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education can be completed either part-time or full-time.
