It is not possible to study Materials and Process Engineering while working; it is offered as a full-time course or, for high school graduates, as a practice-integrated course.

Persons with a Baccalaureate must have at least one year of professional experience for a full-time Bachelor's degree in Process Engineering. Alternatively, there is also the option of a practice-integrated Bachelor's degree program, which enables high school graduates to begin a four-year course of study directly after their high school diploma, which includes an integrated internship in a company.

After graduating, engineers in materials and process engineering find employment with excellent career prospects in companies in a wide range of industries. These specialists are also in demand in basic research, marketing, sales and management. In industry, for example, process engineers develop coatings and materials for nano and micro technology, medical technology, packaging technology or energy technology, select new construction materials in production development, carry out damage analyses and develop solutions, work on process modeling and process simulation, on process developments to produce new energy sources or basic materials, open up new markets for new products, work in employee training, process improvement, project management or quality assurance.

A Bachelor's degree at FIT Zurich in German-speaking Switzerland can only be obtained with the degree "Bachelor of Science FIT" or, for career officers, "Bachelor of Arts FIT". A degree in engineering with a specialization in process engineering can only be obtained in the postgraduate Master's program.
