Betriebswirtin / Betriebswirtin im Automobilgewerbe (formerly Automobilkaufmann / Automobilkauffrau) - the higher professional examination for prospective managing directors of garages and automobile dealerships

Training as a business economist in the automotive industry (HFP) takes two years and offers you an excellent basis for taking over management in a garage or car dealership. During your part-time training, you will acquire all the specialist knowledge you need to run a successful automotive company later on.

The training content includes the following topics, among others:

  • Personnel management (HR)
  • Corporate management
  • Business administration
  • Organization and management of garages
  • Accounting and calculation in a garage
  • Profession-specific marketing
  • Construction and equipment planning for garages
  • Business and labor law etc.

You should meet the following requirements in order to be admitted to the course as an automotive salesperson or automotive salesperson HFP:

  • At least two years of professional experience as an automotive sales advisor, automotive diagnostician or customer service advisor in the automotive industry (each completed with a professional examination)
  • or a Bachelor of Science (FH) in Automotive Engineering (old degree title: Ingenieur/in FH Automobiltechnik or Ingenieur/in HTL mit Fachrichtung Automobiltechnik) - and at least three years of professional experience in the automotive industry.

Car salespeople maintain close contact with the garage's customers and can always inform them about the latest offers. They calculate sales prices, advise on repairs, know the customs of the automobile trade and negotiate with general agencies. They are responsible for the workshop and its employees. If they work for an insurance company, automotive salespeople act as claims experts and assess damage caused by accidents or other events.

To be admitted to the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) in Business Administration in the Automotive Industry, you must have completed and passed the following modules:

  • Infrastructure and risk management
  • Market service provision, logistics, marketing
  • Law
You will obtain all of these module qualifications during the course of your continuing education, further training at a corresponding educational institution.
With the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) in Automotive Business Management, or newly renamed as Business Management in the Automotive Industry, you will be a manager in the automotive industry. You are the managing director, owner or manager of a part of the company and are responsible for spare parts, sales, ordering, customer service, workshops, vehicle sales, finance or administration. Automotive salespeople conduct consulting and sales talks with potential customers and existing customers, provide information about new products and have excellent negotiating skills. Business administrators in the automotive industry are familiar with insurance, traffic, legal and environmental issues relating to their area of responsibility and maintain contact with importers, suppliers and other external partners. As the contact person and person responsible for training, they lead and support their employees on an ongoing basis. Automotive salespeople are responsible for cost estimates and price calculations, they plan and implement marketing strategies, draw up business plans and financial management strategies.
Yes, if you do not pass the final examination to become an automotive business administrator (AFPE), formerly known as an automotive business administrator (HPF), at the first attempt, you have the option of repeating the examination twice more. However, you do not repeat the entire final examination, but only the parts of the examination that you did not pass, i.e. where you achieved a grade of 3.9 or worse.

Anyone wishing to register for the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) in Business Administration in the Automotive Industry (corresponds to the former title of Automotive Business Management Assistant AFPE) must meet the following requirements:

  • Required module qualifications or certificate of equivalence
  • Federal diploma in the automotive industry or equivalent qualification
  • At least two years of practical experience in the automotive industry after passing the Federal Professional Examination
