Bar Manager: Take over the management of the bar team

Are you looking for a change in your working life? Would you like to take on a new challenge? Do you have experience in the hospitality industry or would you like to do something completely different? If so, then a bartender training course might be just the thing for you? If you enjoy serving other people in a courteous manner, if you are open to new things and if you can work well and with concentration even in noisy environments, then it is worth taking a closer look at this job description.

As Chef de Bar, you manage all the staff behind the bar. You organize the processes and delegate smaller tasks. Although a lot has to be organized behind the bar, the customers should still be the focus and always receive your full attention. You should know the drinks menu by heart and be able to help and advise customers on the selection of drinks, wines, beers and other beverages. A good memory is extremely important when working as a bartender. After the bar closes, you will work with your colleagues to replenish the refrigerated shelves and take care of the accounts - a flair for figures is therefore also required.

Questions and answers

To work as a bar manager or bar manageress, you must be over 18 years old, as you are not allowed to serve or mix alcohol beforehand. You also need experience in order to find a job at a bar in a hotel, on a cruise ship, in discotheques or in a catering business. As a bar manager, you will manage the employed bartenders and be responsible for the accounts and inventory, which means a great deal of responsibility, especially in larger or upscale bars. For this reason, prospective bar managers are required to have basic training and continuing education, further training, for example as a bartender or chef de bar, as well as several years of professional experience in the catering industry.

The bar manager is an important part of the hotel's service team and is primarily responsible for the well-being of guests at the bar. He is usually responsible for the planning and organization of the bar and ensures that guests have an unforgettable stay. According to the bar manager's job description, the bar manager's duties include managing, training and motivating the bar team to ensure that all employees are up to date and can do their work effectively and efficiently. He must ensure that the staff are able to provide excellent service to the guests and respond to their wishes and needs.

Showmixing is not normally integrated into a conventional bartending course. In a bartending course you learn the craft, in a showmis course, also known as flairtending, you learn the freestyle. It makes sense to first train as a bar professional in a basic course and then attend a flairtending course, which will enable you to impress your guests as a future bar manager.
To become a bar manager, you should first attend a bartending course where you will not only learn how to mix and decorate tasty cocktails. It is also important for a prospective bar manager to know about hygiene regulations and legal requirements, inventory systems and how to create a good bar menu. In addition to the different types of preparation and comprehensive product knowledge, some schools also offer sales training and the right way to deal with guests, so that you are well equipped for your future work at the bar.

The cost of a bar chef training course varies depending on the provider and scope. However, you can expect to pay between CHF 500 and CHF 1,000. Ask the individual training providers about the costs and the services included.

There is no training in the sense of an apprenticeship to become a bar manager, but you will find some very interesting courses and training programs that will enable you to enter the bar profession. One of these courses is, for example, a certificate course to become a bartender, which is the basis for further promotion to bar manager, or a course to become a chef de bar.

A bartender not only taps beer and pours white wine spritzers, but can also be found in bars where he or she serves cocktails, mixed drinks and spirits. The bartender or barmaid, as the job title is often called, has a broad knowledge of preparation, serving and, of course, the individual spirits on offer and can provide guests with comprehensive information about them. Their experience enables them to find the right drink for each guest or to mix it according to their wishes. Since billing, communication with guests, inventory, cleaning and compliance with legal and hygiene regulations are also part of the tasks of bartenders, this profession should not be underestimated. Comprehensive training as a bartender is not compulsory to start out as one, but well-known or more upmarket bars in particular require solid training. This does not take three years like other training courses and is not federally regulated, but is offered by some private schools. It is best to speak to some bar managers or bar operators to find out what training and experience you expect from your bartenders and get comprehensive information.
Bartending courses are not federally recognized training courses, which means that they are not standardized and mandatory. The content, duration and focus can therefore vary greatly depending on the school. At a bar school, for example, you will find courses for interested private individuals that teach you how to mix properly or teach you about spirits, as well as more extensive courses that are suitable for (prospective) professionals. Such seminars can be traditional bartending training courses, for example, which form the basis for a career as a bartender. But also flairtending and show bartending, molecular mixology or barista courses. Bar management, training as a chef de bar (bar manager) or cruise style mixology can also be the subject of a bartending course.
