Building technician CHE studies: What are the disadvantages of this continuing education, further training?
After graduating as a building services engineer CHE, you will be able to plan, operate and maintain technical building systems. You will install technical systems in the areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning, refrigeration and sanitation. This also includes taking on the project management of larger renovation or new construction projects, for example residential buildings, hospitals, schools or industrial buildings.
The main disadvantages of studying to become a building services engineer CHE are:
- Due to the duration of study of around three to four years, a great deal of time commitment and a high level of self-discipline and motivation is required. Students work part-time alongside their studies, which can lead to a double burden.
- Despite cantonal contributions, a budget of around CHF 24,800 to CHF 25,300 must be planned for the entire Building Services Engineering Planner CHE course, depending on the school. There are also costs for materials and teaching aids. There is no additional loss of salary due to working during the course.
- The course covers many different topics such as thermal and fluid mechanics, building physics, building services and building envelopes, project and process management as well as business management skills, etc. This broad range of subjects can lead to some students feeling overwhelmed.
- The diploma in building services engineering CHE is largely unknown outside Switzerland and not all foreign managers working in Switzerland are familiar with the CHE degree and its significance.
- Working hours can be irregular and there may be intense periods with a high workload, which requires a high degree of flexibility. In addition to technical understanding, building services engineers also need social skills, project management skills and a high sense of responsibility. Students must have these skills or be able to develop them during their studies.
Building services engineers CHE work in management positions in planning offices or building services engineering companies, at energy suppliers or in public administration. They usually work in a team as a hub between various building technology specialists such as engineers, architects, site managers and lead fitters for heating, plumbing, ventilation and cooling.
