Editing is probably one of the most exciting jobs for language and writing enthusiasts. Trained proofreaders usually work for publishing houses, but they also work in the media (radio, newspapers, magazines, television) or are employed by companies in the service sector or an association. Many graduates also aspire to freelance work after completing their training. Their tasks include editing and proofreading - i.e. revising - manuscripts of all kinds, such as articles, books, screenplays, websites, audio books, brochures, annual reports, user manuals, product descriptions, advertising texts, databases, etc.

The exciting thing is that the tasks can vary greatly depending on the assignment and the requirements of the customer are also very different. This is also the reason why proofreading training is very generalist and versatile. In addition to editing third-party manuscripts, numerous other skills are taught, including all the skills required in the field of product management:

  • Editing and optimizing texts
  • Linguistics and language skills (grammar, text analysis, sentence analysis, rhetoric, stylistics, text types, genres, sociolinguistics)
  • Recruitment of customers (authors, companies, publishers)
  • Order planning

The lector training course is very practice-oriented and varied. It consists of numerous practical and case-oriented exercises.

The profession of "lector" is not regulated in Switzerland, i.e. lectors grow into this field of activity from very different professional fields. Various schools and associations offer courses that provide comprehensive preparation for the profession or teach partial skills. As a rule, the participants have originally completed basic training in the book trade or a commercial apprenticeship or have previously completed a degree in the humanities and would like to acquire the necessary skills to successfully gain a foothold in this exciting professional field.

The tasks of editors include customer acquisition, order planning, proofreading and stylistic improvement and design of texts by external authors.

There are many ways to qualify for a job as an editor. One possible route is through basic training in the book trade, supplemented by a humanities degree at a University of Applied Sciences or university.

Some colleges of Higher Education offer a diploma course in "Editing". In addition, there are seminars offered by institutions that provide partial qualifications for editing work.
Possible educational backgrounds for an editing job are:

  • Vocational education and training (VET) in the book trade or in the commercial sector, e.g. Federal VET Diploma in Bookselling or Federal VET Diploma in Communication
  • Bachelor of Arts (UAS) in Communication or Bachelor of Arts (UAS) in Translation
  • University degree (university or University of Applied Sciences) in any field of study

Basically anyone, because training as a proofreader is not regulated in Switzerland. However, it is advisable to complete one or more courses offered by schools or associations in order to become truly successful in this professional field.

In addition to a keen sense of language and communication, editors also need empathy for readers. They also need skills in the areas of product management, acquisition, marketing, graphics, communication psychology, negotiation, etc.
